The Songhai Empire, located in central Mali and extending to the Atlantic coast and parts of Niger and Nigeria during the 1400s and 1500s, was a powerful trading empire known for its wealth from gold and salt. Governed by an emperor with the assistance of ministers and Muslim officials, the empire recognized Islam as its main religion while also allowing local beliefs. The slave trade was significant, with slaves being used for transporting goods and sold to Europeans.
