The Women s Rights Movement
The women s rights movement of the mid nineteenth century unified women around
a number of issues that were seen as fundamental rights for all citizens; they included:
the right to own property, access to higher education, reproductive rights, and
suffrage. Women s suffrage was the most controversial women s rightsissue of the
late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and divided early feminists on different
lines. In 1917 women secured their right to vote, and the women s right lost it s
momentum. During World War I and II women did outside jobs that they liked, to

Despite the tremendous progress made in the struggle for gender equality, women
still face violence, discrimination, and institutional barriers to equal participation in
society. Through litigation, advocacy, and public education, the ACLU Women s
Rights Project pushes for change and systemic reform in institutions that
perpetuate discrimination against women, focusing its work in the areas of
employment, violence against women, and education. They help the to make

Had I had the strength to do something, I would have tremored every part of my
body as I witnessed the atrocity committed by the midnight dumpers . As burns and
the Ward Transformer Company laid waste to me and my body, I saw how the
people that reside on me were harmed by the contamination of PCBs (polychlorinated
biphenyls). Though Burns and his business men were arrested soon after, they still

of contaminated byproducts where legislation and government failed to manage my

Environmental Decision Making , where he proposed a framework for environmental
