    Application software In Academics

Academics

The word comes from the akademeia, just outside ancient Athens, where the gymnasium
was made famous by Plato as a center of learning. The sacred space, dedicated to the
goddess of wisdom, Athena, had formerly been an olive grove, hence the expression "the
groves of Academe."
It also means the community of students and scholars engaged in higher education and
research.

Academic discipline or field of study

An academic discipline, or field of study, is a branch of knowledge which is taught and
researched at the college or university level. Disciplines are defined (in part), and
recognized by the academic journals in which research is published, and the learned
societies and academic departments or faculties to which their practitioners belong.

Fields of study usually have several sub-disciplines or branches, like

   • History
   • Languages and linguistics
   • Literature
   • Performing arts
   • Philosophy
   • Religion
   • Visual arts

   • Anthropology
   • Archaeology
   • Area studies
   • Cultural and ethnic studies
   • Economics

Computer literacy

Computer literacy is defined as the knowledge and ability to use computers and
technology efficiently. Computer literacy can also refer to the comfort level someone has
with using computer programs and other applications that are associated with computers.
Another valuable component of computer literacy knows how computers work and
operate.

Computer Literacy in academics

Computers are also a part of education. Computers are used in Academics for many
applications such as writing papers or searching the Internet for information. Computer
skills are also a subject being specifically taught in many academics.

The dramatic increase in the use of computer-aided instruction in higher education has
come to the point that the use of a computer for a range of learning tasks is now a part of
a student's basic learning toolkit, as much as taking notes or reading texts.
Computer literacy indicates that students found this type of support timely and useful. It
also found that the assumption that some Academic staff make, that students already have
computer literacy skills, is often erroneous.

Computer literacy provides students with the knowledge and skills required by the
Computer and Technology Standards. Students utilize and apply problem-solving
processes. Students demonstrate advanced proficiency and accuracy in keyboarding using
touch typing. They use these keyboarding skills to develop word processing, database and
spreadsheet documents. Students create multimedia documents. Students learn various
file management skills, Website design, ethical and legal issues involved in computer
use, and the history and development of computers. Students explore various career
opportunities that are available with computer knowledge and skills. Students conduct
various Internet searches to accomplish specific tasks and assignments..

Aspects of computer literacy in academics include:

   • what is a computer

           • what are its limitations
           • what is a program (not necessarily how to program)
           • what is computable
           • what a computer cannot do
           • why computers cannot produce random numbers
           • some seemingly simple problems are not
           • concurrency and issues with shared data
           • all computers have the same computing ability with differences in memory
               capacity and speed
           • performance depends on more than CPU clock speed

   • understanding the concept of stored data
   • what are the real causes of "computer errors"
   • the implications of using a program incorrectly (garbage in, garbage out)
   • issues rising from distributed computing
   • computer security

   • social implications/aspects of computing

           • critical assessment of internet sources
           • criminal access to financial databases

   • keyboarding, mousing (using input devices)
   • plugging in and turning the computer on
   • Using/understanding user-interface elements (e.g., windows, menus, icons,
       buttons, etc.)
   • Composing, editing and printing documents
• the ability to communicate with others using computers through electronic mail
       (email) or instant messaging services

   • managing and editing pictures (from cell phones, digital cameras or even scans)
   • Opening files and recognizing different file types
   • Multimedia literacy, including, but not limited to:

           • making movies
           • making sound files
           • interactivity

The computer literacy has a deep impact on education. Computer literacy forms a part of
the school and college curricula, as it is important for every individual today, to have the
basic knowledge of computers. The advantages of computers in education include an
efficient storage and rendition of information, quick information processing and very
importantly the saving of paper.

Computer literacy plays a key role in the modern systems of education. Students find it
easier to refer to the Internet than searching for information in fat reference books. The
process of learning has gone beyond learning from prescribed textbooks. Today, aspirers
can satiate their thirst for knowledge by means of the Internet. It is easier to store
information on computers than maintaining hand-written notes. To know more on the
subject, read about textbooks versus computer literacy.

Online education has revolutionized the education industry. The computer literacy has
made the dream of distance learning, a reality. Education is no more limited to
classrooms. It has reached far and wide thanks to the computer technology. Physically
distant locations have come close to each other only due to computer networking.

Computers facilitate an efficient storage and effective presentation of information.
Presentation software like PowerPoint and animation software like Flash and others can
be of great help to the teachers while delivering information. Computers can turn out
being a brilliant aid in teaching. Computers facilitate an audio-visual representation of
information, thus making the process of learning interactive and interesting. Computer-
aided teaching adds a fun element to education.

Conclusion

A life without computers would seem almost unimaginable for many. The importance of
computer literacy is evident today and having the perfect know-how of computers can
only propel one’s career in the right direction. Today, computers are a part of almost
every industry. They are no more limited to the software industry. They are widely used
in networking, information access, data storage and the processing of information. So
why not introduce computers early in education? Introducing computers early in
education lays the foundation of most of the major competitive careers. Computers play a
significant role in one’s personal and professional life.
