There is a shortage of high quality, RCTs in plastic surgery
(Agha et al, 2013). There are 34 UK surgical research
collaboratives but historically, projects have been expensive
to run and logistically challenging. This review outlines the
use of technology in collaborative research to facilitate low
cost clinical studies in a simple framework.
Literature review
The most frequently documented technologies from 33
published papers described the pattern of software tools in use.
Methods
1. A literature review of research collaborative papers to
identify their existing technologies.
2. Identification of additional technologies through web
searches.
3. Identified technologies were grouped into project themes
including networking and engagement, collaboration, and
event organisation and studied to outline the relative
challenges (C), options (O) and limitations (L)

Events
The rapid development of information technologies has overcome many of the logistical and
financial barriers to collaborative research. These technologies are often overlooked in the
literature. The STiCR framework provides a comprehensive overview of available technologies
to support multi-centre collaboration.
