Audio information and media can exist in several formats and mediums. Audio formats include analog tapes and digital files, while common mediums are tapes, CDs, memory cards, computer hard drives, and the internet. There are two main types of audio media: analog, which replicates original sound waves, like vinyl and cassettes, and digital, which takes samples of sound waves at set rates, like CDs and MP3s. Digital audio provides high fidelity but can never perfectly replicate sound waves like analog. Common audio file formats are MP3, M4A, WAV, and WMA.
