AZURE DATA
CENTERS
1. Global Reach: Azure has data centers distributed
across the globe, organized into regions. Each
region consists of multiple data centers to
ensure redundancy and fault tolerance.
2.Regions: These are physical locations where
Azure data centers are clustered. Regions are
typically located close to major population
centers to reduce latency.
3.Availability Zones: Within a region, there can be
multiple Availability Zones (AZs). An AZ is a
physically separate location with its own power,
cooling, and networking. Azure ensures that
resources in different AZs are isolated to protect
your applications and data from failures in a
single location.
4.Geographies: These are discrete markets,
typically containing two or more regions, that
preserve data residency and compliance
NETWORKING
INFRASTRUCTURE
1.Global Network: Azure operates one of the
largest global networks, connecting all its data
centers. This network includes subsea fiber-optic
cables, land-based fiber, and peering points,
ensuring high-speed data transfer and low
latency.
2.Edge Locations: These are strategically placed
locations that cache data closer to end-users,
improving speed and performance for services
like Azure CDN and Azure Front Door.
3.ExpressRoute: Azure ExpressRoute provides a
dedicated, private connection between on-
premises infrastructure and Azure data centers,
bypassing the public internet to offer more
security, reliability, and faster speeds.
COMPUTE
RESOURCES
1.Physical Servers: Azure's physical servers are the
foundation of its compute services. These
servers run hypervisors (like Hyper-V) that allow
multiple virtual machines (VMs) to run on a
single physical server.
2.VM Scale Sets: These allow you to deploy and
manage a set of identical VMs. The scale sets can
automatically increase or decrease the number
of VMs based on demand.
3.Dedicated Hosts: For customers needing a
dedicated physical server, Azure offers dedicated
hosts, allowing you to place your VMs on a
specific physical server.
STORAGE
INFRASTRUCTURE!
1.Disk Storage: Azure uses a mix of Solid State
Drives (SSDs) and Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) for
various storage tiers, offering different
performance levels. Premium SSDs are used for
high-performance workloads.
2.Blob Storage: This is used for storing
unstructured data like images, videos, and
backups. Azure uses erasure coding and
replication across multiple regions to ensure
data durability.
3.Azure Storage Accounts: These accounts manage
the capacity, access, and performance of data
storage. They provide options for hot, cool, and
archive access tiers depending on how frequently
the data is accessed.
SECURITY AND
COMPLIANCE!
1.Data Encryption: Data at rest is encrypted using
256-bit AES encryption, and data in transit is
protected with SSL/TLS protocols.
2.Compliance Certifications: Azure meets a wide
range of global, regional, and industry-specific
compliance standards, including GDPR, HIPAA,
ISO 27001, and others.
3.Physical Security: Azure data centers are
protected with multiple layers of security,
including biometric access controls, security
cameras, and 24/7 security staff.
HIGH AVAILABILITY
AND DISASTER
RECOVERY
1.Redundancy: Azure services are designed with
redundancy in mind, ensuring that even if one
component fails, another can take over without
service interruption.
2.Disaster Recovery: Azure offers various disaster
recovery solutions, such as Azure Site Recovery,
which replicates your workloads to another
region and allows for quick failover in case of a
regional failure.
3.Service Level Agreements (SLAs): Azure provides
SLAs for its services, guaranteeing uptime and
availability. The SLA varies depending on the
service and the architecture you use (e.g., single
VM vs. multiple VMs in different AZs).
COOLING AND POWER
INFRASTRUCTURE!
1.Power Redundancy: Azure data centers have
multiple power feeds, backup generators, and
uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) to ensure
continuous operation even during power
outages.
2.Cooling Systems: Data centers use advanced
cooling techniques, including air and liquid
cooling, to maintain optimal temperatures for
servers. This includes using outside air when
conditions allow, to reduce energy consumption.
