Be
Creative!
Group Activity
SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION QUESTION:
What
helps you to be
creative?
“Creativity is inventing,
experimenting, growing,
taking risks, breaking
rules, making mistakes,
and having fun.”
Mary Lou Cook
The Target of Life
is a very helpful way to understand our
individual and collective well-being.
When you’re centered in the
heart of the Target of Life, you’re
at your best and life seems
brighter.
You see clearly and therefore
make optimal decisions.
You feel peaceful, loving,
energetic, and happy.
You’re in a good position to
handle just about anything.
However, when things happen
that go against our desires and
expectations, it’s easy to get
pulled off center.
We experience more fear and
negativity.
We say and do things we
regret.
The immune system weakens
and our productivity declines.
We lose touch with what’s
really important to us.
Unhealthy stress increases and
our sensitivity toward others
decreases.
And the further away from the
center we move, the worse it
gets!
That’s why it’s so important to
catch early signs of stress, and to
use all of our creativity to stay as
centered as possible.
When we are centered in the
heart on the Target of Life,
difficulties still crop up, but we
can handle them much more
smoothly and effectively.
The more centered we are, the
greater our well-being, the wiser
our choices, and the more
effective we are in everything we
do.
Creativity
is the power
to bring something
new and useful
into existence.
You are an enormously
creative person!
That creativity is always within
you, and you must express it in
order to experience the satisfaction
and joy that is your birthright.
Terrorism, widespread public
scandals, economic uncertainties,
international conflicts, and a host of
other problems have launched us into
a turbulent, yet potential-filled
21st century.
Has the full measure of our creativity
ever been needed more?
A life brimming with
creativity is no longer
the luxury of a few;
it’s the duty and
privilege of all of us.
Group Activity
SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION QUESTION:
What are some factors
that keep people from
becoming more creative?
CAUTION!
Roadblocks Ahead
Roadblocks that typically prevent
capable people from expressing their
creativity more fully:
Thinking “I’m not very creative.”
Fear of criticism from others.
“That’s not my job.”
Stress, Laziness, Self-Criticism.
“There’s only one right way.”
CAUTION!
Roadblocks Ahead
Wasting time on nonessentials.
“You have to follow the rules.”
Too much talk, too little doing.
Fear of failure.
Resistance to change.
Limiting beliefs.
 Worrying about who gets credit.
Lack of faith.
Though we express it in
different ways and to varying
degrees, creativity is a gift
that has been given in
abundance to each of us.
Continually remind
yourself of this truth:
You are a marvelously
resourceful individual with
unique perspectives and talents that
are needed to create the best world
possible for yourself and others.
Creativity thrives
in an atmosphere of
freedom, playfulness,
trust, spontaneity,
and enthusiasm.
When an innovative idea
pops into your mind—and this
happens much more often than you
might realize—jot it down right away;
give it your respectful attention, and
instead of judging the idea,
honor it and have fun with it!
Develop an eagle’s eye
for spotting and encouraging
the creative tendencies of
family members, friends,
co-workers, neighbors,
and community leaders.
In relationships,
organizations, or communities
that confront difficulties, get together
and enjoy an all-out brainstorming
session, building on each other’s
ideas and generating as many
imaginative solutions as possible.
Group Activity
SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION QUESTION:
What could you do
to encourage more creativity
among your family, friends,
and co-workers?
FOLLOW YOUR
LIFE-AFFIRMING PASSIONS!
Pay close attention to your positive
passions, both in the details of life and in
major decisions. In your heart of hearts,
what pulls you the most? What needs to be
changed? What are you enthusiastic
about? What do you love to do?
WALK ON THE WILD SIDE!
Be daring; take risks; break the
rules; be unpredictable. Let the “wild
woman” or “wild man” within you
come out and romp. Of course, as you
walk on the wild side, be true to your
deepest self and kind
to all those around you.
TAKE TIME FOR
SILENCE AND SOLITUDE!
We block imagination and innovation
when our lives are too busy, too noisy, too
filled with planning and analytic thinking.
Make space in your life for peace and
quiet, and listen receptively to the creative
promptings within and around you.
GIVE UP THE NEED TO LOOK GOOD!
Ask dumb questions.
Say what you really think and feel. Do
what brings you peace and helps others,
even if it’s unpopular. Forget about
looking good and instead focus on
being true to yourself and your
heartfelt inner guidance.
ADOPT A CREATIVE GENIUS!
Select a historical figure or modern-day
hero as a creativity mentor. Choose
someone you deeply admire—maybe an
expert in your field, Leonardo da Vinci,
Helen Keller, or a great spiritual figure.
Study your chosen genius and strive to
make his or her best qualities your own.
EXPOSE YOURSELF
TO WHAT’S NEW AND DIFFERENT!
Travel to unique and stimulating places.
Interact with people of diverse ethnic,
religious, and cultural backgrounds.
Listen well to those who disagree with
you. Browse through books that are
totally out of your area of expertise.
If it’s in keeping with your spiritual beliefs,
TUNE IN WITH THE DIVINE!
Attune to “The Creator” through prayer
and meditation. Invite a constant flow of
divine guidance and inspiration into the
temple of your creativity. Become an
instrument for the expression of
Omnipresent Good in its myriad forms.
SIT AT THE FEET OF YOUNG
CHILDREN AND WISE ELDERS!
The very young and very old see life from
unique and fascinating vantage points.
Seek the precious insight of
young children and the
wisdom-bestowing experience of elders.
Group Activity
SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION QUESTION:
Bring to mind someone you
know who is very creative.
What do they believe, think, and
do that helps them to be
so creative?
A New Possibility
Think about what you have been
learning, and then pick out one small
goal you want to accomplish in the next
few days. Choose a new possibility that’s
important to you. Write your action plan
now, briefly stating exactly what you
will do and by when.
“When the artist is
alive in any
person, whatever
the type of work, he or
she becomes an inventive,
searching, daring,
self-expressing creature.”
Robert Henri
POSITIVE SELF-TALK
Every problem I face is
an opportunity for learning,
creating, and growing.
I skillfully handle each difficulty
with wisdom, playfulness,
and confidence.
Remember, the more centered you are on
the Target of Life, the more accepting and
loving you will be, and the easier it will be
for you to follow through successfully on
your creative inspirations.
Together, let’s envision
and build a world where
all people enjoy optimal
well-being. Let’s strive to awaken
fresh thinking, new enthusiasm, and
abundant love. Let’s create a world
of undreamed-of possibilities.
It can be done!
Almost
anything
is possible—
if you believe it.
