Part I:
Effect of Temperature on Enzyme Activity(Invertase)
The rate of an enzyme–catalyzed reaction will increase with temperature to maximum rate and then
sharply decrease. The rate increases to about 40 degrees Celsius, at which point the structure of
proteins is disrupted (denaturation), resulting in an abrupt loss of enzyme activity.
PROCEDURE:
1. Number 3 test tubes (1,2, and 3) with a permanent marker. Add 4 ml of a sucrose solution to each
test tube.
2. Place tube 1 in a beaker of ice water; place tube 2 in a beaker of water at room temperature, and
tube 3 in a beaker of boiling water. Wait 10 minutes for the sucrose solution in the tubes to
equilibrate with the temperature of the water in the beakers.
3. After 10 minutes, add 0.5ml of 25 percent invertase (an enzyme derived from yeast) solution to
each tube (swirl the invertase solution before use). Cover each tube and invert it several times to mix
the contents during the 5 minutes.
4. After 5 minutes add 1ml of Benedict's solution to each test tube. Place the 3 tubes at the same
time in a boiling water for 5 minutes.
5. Remove all 3 tubes from the water bath at the same time and observe the amount of precipitate
and the color of the Benedict's solution in the tube. Then I would record my observation on a data
graph sheet

The first national park, Yellow Stone National Park, was established in 1872 by Ulysses S. Grant
(Brown). This was one of the last explored areas in the west. This establishing of a national park
led to more wildlife conservation national movements. In 1887 President Roosevelt gathered a
group of influential American hunters in New York to form the Boome and Crockett Club with a
mission of preserving big game in North America (Brown). In the 1930's management of wildlife

Structure and function in Biology is a broad concept that can be explored within a diverse range of

Deoxyribonucleic Acid, or more commonly DNA. DNA is a highly complex, intricate and
extraordinary macromolecule found within all living cells. DNA is a "biochemical noun" and can be

Furthermore, DNA is found in large quantities within the eukaryotic cell. Human cells alone have

Problems with doing the experiments. The temperature readings were hard to make. Gloves had to
be worn to keep my hands from getting too hot. Had to be careful that the stove heat was not hitting
the thermometer.
Other things learned. Be careful when adding salt to boiling water. It makes the water boil

As the bell rung for the end of first period, I gathered my things and began to walk to my second
period class, Biology. Biology was always to me the hardest subject I had ever dealt with because
there was so much to learn, study, and truly understand. I walked through the door into the
classroom and I'll never forget the words I heard my teacher say that caught me so off–guard. "Get
out your notes and study because you have a test today", he said. As I heard him finish his
sentence, my eyes widen and I quickly moved towards my seat and began to skim over my notes as
fast as I could. I had completely forgot that I had a test in biology.
While reading over my notes, I kept thinking to myself that I just knew I was going to fail this
test. After a couple of minutes of studying, I heard the teach yell "5 more minutes". I began to
skim even faster over my notes. It felt like time was moving so fast because when I heard my
teach yell "times up", it seemed as if only 2 minutes had passed by. He passed out the answer sheet
around the classroom and instructed us to fill out our student ID numbers. I looked over the unfilled
answer sheet and counted the amount of questions. There were 30 questions in total which
frightened me even more because I had to answer 30 questions on information that I barely studied.
Then he handed out the test and I became extremely nervous because not only did I barely study and

Until I started high school, I had no idea what major I wanted to pursue in college. After all, there

Climate change is altering the pattern of life on the planet, causing widespread species
extinction, migration and behavior changes (Suzuki, n.d.). For example, female caribou migrate
in the spring to small pockets of vegetation where they feed and raise there calves, but for the last
decade spring has come so early that by the time the caribou reach the coastal plan, their principle
of food plant has already gone to seed (Suzuki, n.d.). This proves that the female caribou are going
to have to change breeding time frames, as well as migration, which will have an overall affect
on the ecosystem. This also means that animals and plants will have to permanently migrate to
find suitable habitats but some will not be able to move fast enough to keep up with the pace of

move 10 times faster than they did during the last ice age just to survive. Over 30% of land
surfaces in Canada will require unrealistically high migration rates to keep up with projected

Lactase Experiment
The results of the experiment vary from what is reported by previous studies (Curry, 2013, Enattah
et al., 2002, & Tishkoff, 2007). The experiment was conducted on students currently in the Biology
225 course in Schenectady, NY. The class was primarily composed of individuals whom are
descendants of Europe. Therefore, an assumption was made that by in large, the percentage of lactase
persistent in the class that was expected was going to be near 95% (Curry, 2013). However, such a
high percentage was not found. Of the class, only 49.3% of individuals were determined to possess a
genotype that results in a phenotype of lactase persistence. Conversely, 40.8% of the class was found
to carry the genotype lct/lct which results in the phenotype of lactase non–persistence. Therefore, the
results are nearly 50% off from what we expected initially. This could be for numerous reasons,
but perhaps the assumption should not have been made. The results fit much better when
compared to the world average occurrence of lactase persistence. Curry notes that out of all
individuals over the age of 8 years old, only 35% still possess the ability to digest and breakdown
the lactose in dairy products (2013). The results do fit closer to the world average, therefore
indicating that the assumption may have been wrong, the results of the experiment still do not
necessarily indicate whether the total population of students in the Spring 2016 Biology 225 class
fits the societal model where there is a

Biology Major Essay
I am pursuing the major Bio Sciences: Human Biology Intent with the intentions of using this
major to help increase my chances of going to medical school. This major will also assist me in
exploring my love for biology, thus why I am determined to go to medical school in order to learn
about the human body and diseases.
In ten years I see myself as a college graduate who is currently attending medical school. While I am
enrolled in medical school I will be pursuing a career as a pediatrician. To make this vision a reality I
am pursuing a biology major. This major will give me the opportunity to learn more about what I am
passionate about and expand my views on biology.
I discovered my passion for biology during my time in elementary school.
