BIOTECHNOLOGY VIRTUAL LAB
    DEPENDENT AND INDEPENDENT VARIABLES

Scientists use an experiment to search for
cause and effect relationships in nature. In
other words, they design an experiment so
that changes to one item cause
something else to change in a
 predictable way.

 These changing qualities are called
 variables.
An experiment usually has three kinds of
BIOTECHNOLOGY VIRTUAL LAB
    DEPENDENT AND INDEPENDENT VARIABLES

Scientists focus their observations on the
dependent variables to see how it responds to the
change made to the independent variable.
The change of the dependent variable is
caused by and depends on the value of the
independent variable.
Controlled variables are factors that a
scientist want to remain constant (the same).
They are used to compare the depended
variable’s changes in the experiment and keep
the tests fair.
BIOTECHNOLOGY VIRTUAL LAB
LET’S TRY:

Underline the Independent Variable. (What I
change)

Circle the Dependent Variable. (What I see respond)

 1. The price of gas determines
 how much I will purchase.
BIOTECHNOLOGY VIRTUAL LAB
LET’S TRY:

Underline the Independent Variable. (What I
change)

Circle the Dependent Variable. (What I see respond)

 2. If I do not want to gain weight,
the amount of exercise I need to
do is a results of how much I eat.
BIOTECHNOLOGY VIRTUAL LAB
LET’S TRY:

Underline the Independent Variable. (What I
change)

Circle the Dependent Variable. (What I see respond)
 3. To finish your math assignment in 30
minutes you must answer one problem every
 6 minutes.

Experiment #1
•Click and Drag Seed Variety BT 123 into both containers
•In the left container allow no ECB
•In the right container infest it with LOW ECB
•Grow the Corn (140 days)
•Click and drag each ear on each plant to the weighing dish.
•Drag the weighing dish on to the balance. Read and record the mass on the data
table.
•Calculate the average for each infestation level.
•Reset Experiment Chambers when done.
