John von Neumann was a Hungarian-American mathematician who helped develop the block diagram model of a computer. The block diagram shows the major components of a computer system including input and output units to receive and display data, a central processing unit (CPU) to perform calculations and control operations, and a storage unit to hold data and instructions. The CPU consists of an arithmetic logical unit to perform calculations and a control unit to direct the system. The block diagram provides a simplified and conceptual overview of how a basic computer system is organized and functions.
