BSF Building Schools for the Future...
What question are we trying to answer? How will BSF make a difference to the environment?
Why Should Schools in Lewisham Reduce their Carbon Footprints? The world is in serious danger of global warming. As you may already know polar ice-caps are melting and the polar region has become a serious concern. The UK is one of the biggest producers of CO 2 in the world That’s why we think Lewisham should lead the way for the new “carbon neutral” schools
Figures Compared to India, an LEDC, in the last 50 years: England emitted 29.73 billion tonnes of CO 2 India emitted 17.58 billion tonnes of CO 2 England per person – 500 tonnes India per person – 17 tonnes
BSF will……………… Help us to reduce our impact on the environment Reduce our carbon footprint Teach energy conservation from a young age Utilise more renewable resources
BUILDING MATERIALS
Fly Ash Bricks Fly ash bricks are made from fly ash which is coal fired power plant waste. They can pull toxic metals/gases from the otherwise clean air They cost an estimated £1100.70 per tonne (which is 1000 bricks).
Isonat Insulation It is made from hemp and recycled cotton fibres. When it is growing it absorbs carbon dioxide It is fire retardant. Prices are about £8.30 for 100mm thick----£6.25 for 75mm thick----And £4.16 for 50mm thick
DESIGN
ADVANTAGES Good eco friendly design Made out of recyclable materials such as Steel. DISADVANTAGE Very costly to make. Looks like a giant cheese
ADVANTAGES Uses Steel No concrete needed DISADVANTAGES Doesn’t fit purpose
IDEA 1 IDEA 2 THE TWO INITIAL DESIGNS
But for our final design we decided to merge both ideas and this is what came out.

The Gym…
ELECTRICITY AND HEATING
What is Geothermal heating? Geothermal heating is eco friendly & relies on the Earth’s natural thermal energy A geothermal heat pump system utilizes the earth’s heat All year a water-source heat pump utilizes available heat in the winter and puts heat back into the ground in the summer. This is already being used in Norbury
SELCHP Waste Plant Takes 10% of London’s rubbish and make it into approx 35 MW of energy They take rubbish which is then burned The steam powers turbines which supply the factory with electrical power which we will buy to power the school The steam then cools down and forms heated water then they store the water This could be used to heat our building
METHOD OF ELECTRICITY WIND TURBINE: Mean wind speed in London is 5mph Our school will have 1 turbine as it will limit costs Electricity generated by wind turbines won’t dirty the air we breathe or emit pollutant, that means less smog, less acid rain and fewer greenhouse gas emissions .

For a wind turbine of a 26ft blade radius we calculated how much energy it would produce at 5mph School would need 20500 kwh per month power output from the turbine is 500 kwh per month 500 ÷ 20500 x 100 = 2.4% = Amount saved SCHOOL PAYS PER YEAR ( NATIONAL GRID ) = £20000 SAVED ( THROUGH TURBINE ) = £500 PER YEAR COST OF TURBINE = £20000 YEARS TO RECOUP MONEY = 40 YEARS 40 years is a long time to recoup money but we feel that the environment is more important
“The Living Roof” Meet the Building!!
THE ROOF Why have we chosen a living roof ? Eco-friendly Reduces our carbon footprint Uses all available space Educational tool Resources such as fruit or vegetables Acts as insulation
Uniform We have decided to utilise a uniform made entirely of hemp. This will be both, environmentally friendly and durable. As well as cost effective and practical.
We have made our design…… REALISTIC ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY COST EFFECTIVE DESIRABLE
