The border ballads originated in the Anglo-Scottish border region and celebrate the lives and events of both sides. They vividly depict raids, feuds, betrayals, romances and acts of revenge involving ungovernable heroes and powerful women. Most date back to the 15th-16th centuries and continued as an oral tradition for hundreds of years in the Scots or North-East dialects. One famous example is the ballad of Tam Lin, where the woman Janet falls in love with Tam Lin, who has been taken by the Queen of the Fairies. He asks Janet to save him on Halloween and she succeeds, breaking the spell, much to the Queen's anger.
