Why a Sabbatical?
● Rejuvenation; learning; time to do extended research;
partner with faculty
○ reinvesting in the institution
○ job skill development / experience
● At Boise State, only 1 other librarian had taken
sabbatical

Goals of Sabbatical
● Understand the framework for how the work of
acquisitions is structured and executed
● Understand the e-resource lifecycle to bring back critical
skills to inform better service desk training
○ Changes in service desk strategy - AS staff needed to
know more about e-resources to be effective answering
patron questions.
Pam’s Perspective
Ordering, Interlibrary Loan and Gifts
Ordering, Interlibrary Loan and Gifts
● Processing Borrowing and Lending Requests
● Document Delivery
● Purchase articles through Interlibrary Loan
● Order books in print and electronically
● Order Non-book materials
● Process Gifts in kind that come into the building
● Software and Accessibility Review for electronic
resources
Lessons Learned
● We need a glossary of terminology.
● We need to add more pictures into our procedures.
● It is helpful to have an example to work through when
showing someone outside our area what we do.
● Having team members explain tasks to someone
outside their area helps reinforce the process for the
person who does the task regularly.
● One of the benefits of having a public services librarian
is having our team members think about what they do
and share what they like most about their jobs.
Marlena’s Perspective
Receiving & Collections
Receiving & Collections
● Receive and Invoice Print and Electronic Monograph
Materials
● Copy Catalog Print and Electronic Purchased and
Open Access Materials
● License and Order Streaming Videos
● Manage Licenses for Library Electronic Resources
● Collect and Report Electronic Resource Usage Data
● Physical Processing of Print Materials
● Library Conservation and Mending Functions
Realizations
● Working together with different terms/vocabulary
● Road to understanding is long
● Creating troubleshooting skills
● Hearing different perspectives to create new
opportunities
Mary’s Perspective
How did it go?
Sabbatical Thoughts
● Establish structure!
● Strengthens relationships but also complicates
them
● Learning by immersion
● Many benefits of exposing traditional public
services staff to the work flow and complex work
environment of technical services
● Found commonalities, redundancies, and
opportunities for deeper collaboration
Continued Learning
● Develop workshops and learning opportunities for library
staff, and librarians in particular
● Explore micro-sabbaticals or concentrated periods of
learning for unit employees
○ Succession planning
○ Talent development
○ Strategic skill building for growth in new areas
