If you do not have a modern phone socket, call Freefone 0800 800 150 and ask for a BT engineer to come and fit the correct one. This is a chargeable service. Location You need to place your Decor 425 close enough to the phone and mains power sockets so that both cords will reach. Setting up the phone 1. Plug the power adaptor into the left side of your Decor 425. 2. Route the power cord through the groove as shown below. Plug the adaptor into the mains power and switch on. You will hear, “Answer on, calls will be answered after six rings”.

Use ᮤ Skip and Stop Skip ᮣ until the current day is announced. to scroll through the days. C. When you hear the correct day, press hour is announced. D. Use ᮤ Skip and Skip ᮣ ᮤ Skip and Skip ᮣ . Your Decor 425 uses the 24-hour clock - 13 is 1pm, 14 is 2pm and so on. G. When you hear the correct minute, press Stop . The clock is now set and the current day and time are announced. 5 Set the ringer switch. Position the ringer switch on the base to On or Off. Ringer On – The phone rings when you receive an incoming call. Ringer Off – The phone does not ring when you receive an incoming call. If there is a power failure you will need to reset the day and time. To check the day and time setting Press Stop . 7

Lets you set and check the day and time. Skip> Skip forward through your messages during playback. Sets the number of rings before your answering machine answers. Message indicator Flashes to indicate you have messages/memos stored.

Lift the handset, listen for the dial tone, then dial the number. End a call 1. Replace the handset. Receiving calls When your phone rings: If the ringer switch is set to Ringer Off (see page 7), the phone will not ring when you receive a call. 1. Lift the handset to take the call. Redial 1. Lift the handset. 2. Press Redial . The last number called is dialled. If the last number dialled exceeds 32 digits it will not be held in the redial memory

Press and hold 2. Release When storing numbers in the memory you will not hear confirmation beeps as you press the keypad buttons. When storing numbers you will still hear the dial tone and may hear recorded messages from the telephone exchange. Please ignore this, it does not affect storing numbers. . Your caller cannot hear you. to talk to your caller again. Storing memory numbers Up to 10 phone numbers can be stored in the memory. Each number can be up to 16 digits long. 1. Lift the handset. You will hear the dialling tone. 2. Press Store . 3. Enter the phone number you want to store. 4. Press Store again. WX 5. Press a number between 0 - 9 on the keypad where you want to store the phone number. YZ Use the directory label to make a note of the numbers you have stored in the memory. Secrecy Secrecy The number is stored and you can replace the handset. To insert a pause when storing a number When storing a number, press (Redial) where you want to enter a pause. Changing stored numbers Repeat the steps for storing a number. The new number will replace the existing stored number.

Press the button 0 - 9 where the number is stored. The number is dialled. Storing your best friend number Your most frequently used number can be stored under the best friend button. 1. Lift the handset. 2. Press Store . 3. Enter the phone number you want to store. 4. Press Store 5. Press Best Friend again. . The number is stored and you can replace the handset. 13

The number is dialled. Changing your best friend number Repeat the steps for storing the number. The new number will replace the existing stored number.

Press Ans on off to switch off. You will hear “Answer off”. Or 1. Press Ans on off to switch on. You will hear “Answer on” and your current outgoing message will be announced. Adjusting the loudspeaker volume 1. Use button to increase or decrease the loudspeaker volume. Vol Outgoing message The outgoing message is the message a caller hears when your BT Decor 425 answers a call. There are two pre-recorded outgoing messages that you can choose from, outgoing message 1 allows callers to leave a message, whilst outgoing message 2 does not. OGM – Outgoing Message. 15

Your call cannot be taken at the moment, so please leave your message after the tone”. Selecting the OGM 1. Press and hold . You will hear “Please select outgoing message”. Ans on off 2. Press Skip for OGM1 (Answer and Record) or Skip for OGM2 (Answer only). The selected OGM is played back and instructions are given on how to record a new outgoing message. ᮤ OGM2 (Answer only) – pre-recorded message “Hello. Your call cannot be taken at the moment and you cannot leave a message, so please call later”. Use either of these OGMs, or if you prefer you can record your own, see opposite. ᮣ Recording your own OGM1 (Answer and Record) Your OGM can be up to 3 minutes long. 1. Press and hold OGM2 is ‘Answer only’ so your message should not invite callers to leave a message. Ans on off . You will hear “Please select outgoing message”. 2. Press ᮤ Skip to re-record OGM1 (Answer and Record) The current OGM is played back to you. You are then invited to record your own OGM. 3. Press and hold ᮤ Skip to begin recording. 4. After the beep, speak your message clearly about 15–30cm from the microphone. 5. Release ᮤ Skip to end recording. Your OGM is played back to you.

You will hear “Please select outgoing message”. 2. Press Skip ᮣ to re-record OGM2 (Answer only). The current OGM is played back to you. You are then invited to record your own OGM. 3. Press and hold Skip ᮣ to begin recording. 4. After the beep, speak your message clearly about 15-30cm from the microphone. 5. Release Skip ᮣ to end recording. Your OGM is played back to you. Checking your OGM 1. Press Ans on off until the answering machine switches on. Your current OGM will be played back to you. 17

When you hear “Please select outgoing message” release the button. Ans on off 2. Press ᮤ Skip to delete OGM1. Or Press Skip ᮣ to delete OGM2. The chosen OGM begins to play. 3. During playback press Del . Your Decor 425 plays back the default pre-recorded OGM. Your Decor 425 will stop recording if: • A caller pauses for more than 4 seconds when leaving a message. • The memory becomes full during recording. • The incoming message lasts longer than 3 minutes. Indefinite message back-up Your Decor 425 saves all messages indefinitely until you delete them. Your messages will not be lost in the event of a power cut. Memory full If the answering machine memory becomes full the message indicator will flash rapidly. You will not be able to record any more caller’s messages, a new OGM or memos. The BT Decor 425 will announce memory full.
5558 BT Decor 425 UG [3] 28/10/03 3:16 PM Page 19 BT Decor 425 – Edition 3.1 – 28.10.03 – 5558 Using the answering machine If any of these functions are tried while the memory is full, your Decor 425 will announce “Memory full”. To clear space in the memory you will need to delete some or all of the messages. See ‘To delete individual messages’, on page 21. Answer delay The answer delay is the number of times your Decor 425 rings before answering calls. It is pre-set to 6 rings. You can choose from between 2 and 9 rings or Time Saver. 1. Press and hold Skip . You hear the settings. ᮣ 2. Release Skip when you hear the setting you want You will hear the new setting confirmed. ᮣ Checking the answer delay setting Press Skip . You will hear the setting. ᮣ What is Time Saver? If you access your answering machine remotely and you have set Time Saver mode, your Decor 425 will answer calls after 6 rings if no new messages have been recorded, or 2 rings if new messages have been recorded. So, you can hang-up after 2 rings knowing you have no new messages and save the cost of the call. See page 23 for more information on remote access. 19

Memos are stored on the answering machine like caller’s messages and can be up to 12 minutes long (maximum recording time). 1. Press and hold ᮤ Skip . You will hear “Please speak after the tone. To end recording, release the button”. 2. Still holding microphone. ᮤ Skip speak your memo clearly into the 3. To end recording release the ᮤ Skip button. Message indicator When you have new messages the message indicator will flash. The LED will flash when any messages are received, regardless of whether they have been listened to. The light is on permanently when the answering machine is on and there are no messages received. The light is off only when the answering machine is off.

The number of stored messages is announced. Your messages and memos are then played back in the order they were received together with the day and time of recording. While your messages are being played back: Press ᮤ Skip once to replay the current message Press ᮤ Skip twice to return to the previous message. Press Skip ᮣ Press Stop to skip forward to the next message. to stop playback. When you reach the last message you will hear, “End of messages. To delete all messages, press delete”. Deleting individual messages During playback of the relevant message: 1. Press Del . You will hear, “Message deleted” and the next message will be played. 21

Deleting all messages 1. Wait until all messages have been played back and you hear “End of messages. To delete all messages, press delete”. 2. During the next 8 seconds, press Del . You will hear “All messages deleted”. To screen calls, make sure the answer machine is switched on and that the loudspeaker volume is set to an audible level. Call screening When your answering machine takes an incoming call, you can listen to the caller over the loudspeaker. You can then decide whether or not to take the call in person. 1. When the phone rings, let the machine answer the call and wait until the caller begins to leave their message. 2. If you choose to speak to the caller in person, pick up your handset. Your Decor 425 will automatically stop recording.

Before you can access your messages, you must enter a 3-digit security code. The pre-set security code is 000, but you can change this to a more memorable number. Check your security code 1. Press Del . The security code is announced. Change your security code 1. Press and hold Del . “Security code setting” is announced. 2. Release Del . You will hear “First digit” and the current setting. ᮤ Skip and Skip ᮣ WX to move through the digits 0 – 9 . Each number is announced as you skip through. YZ 3. Use 23

You will hear “Second digit” and the current setting. 5. Select the second and third digits as you did for the first. When you have set all three digits, your new security code will be announced. Remote operation 1. Call your Decor 425. 2. After listening to the outgoing message press on the phone you are using. You will hear, “Please enter your security code”. If you do not enter the security code within 8 seconds or if you enter the wrong security code you will hear, “Incorrect security code, please enter your security code”. If you enter the wrong code again you will hear, “Incorrect security code, thank you for calling” and the line will be disconnected. 3. You have 8 seconds to enter your security code. 4. You will hear “You have ‘x’ new messages” and message playback begins. 5. At the end of playback you will hear “To hear the main menu, press 1”. You now have 8 seconds to enter the main menu before your phone hangs up. 6. Follow the instructions in the main menu to control your answering machine (see ‘Remote access menu’).

Ring your Decor 425. After 20 rings your machine will take the call. While listening to your OGM, pressing (5) will reset to the pre-recorded OGM. 2. You can now access your Decor 425 remotely (see page 24). PQR S 3. Select 7 from the main menu, to switch on.

Please check that your BT Decor 425 has been correctly set up, see page 6, before ringing the BT Decor 425 Helpline. No dialling tone Check your line/power cord connections. You dial and nothing happens You may be connected to an exchange which has not been modernised. Call BT on Freefone 0800 800 150 for information. The phone does not ring Check the ringer is not turned off. (See page 7). Are there too many other phones or faxes connected to the same line? (See ‘How many telephones can you have?’, on page 33.) You hear the dial tone or recorded exchange messages when storing numbers This may happen when storing numbers. Ignore any noise as it will not affect storing. 27

Check that the memory is not full. Incoming messages do not record Check that answering machine is set to Answer on. (See page 15). Check that answering machine is set to OGM1. (See ‘Outgoing message’ on page 16.) Check that the memory is not full. You cannot hear your messages during playback The loudspeaker volume may be set too low. Check you are using the correct security code. (See page 23.) When entering your code, make sure you allow enough time, at least 2 seconds, between digits for your Decor 425 to recognise each one. Noise interference coming through the loudspeaker Make sure your Decor 425 is not placed too near another mobile or cordless phone. Some cordless telephones and payphones are not compatible. Using an unauthorised power supply unit will invalidate your guarantee and may damage the answer machine. The item code for the power supply unit is 010198. Do not open your Decor 425. This could expose you to high voltages or other risks. Environmental Do not expose to direct sunlight. We recommend that you do not place the product on antique/veneered wood to avoid damage. Do not stand your product on carpets or other surfaces which generate fibres, or place it in locations preventing a free flow of air over it’s surfaces. Do not submerge any part of your product in water and do not use it in damp or humid conditions, such as in bathrooms. Do not expose your product to fire, explosive or other hazardous conditions. There is a slight chance that your phone could be damaged by an electrical storm. We recommend that you unplug the power and telephone line cord for the duration of the storm, as damage is not covered by the guarantee.

Never use household polish as this may damage the product. Never use a dry cloth as this may cause static shock. Guarantee Your BT Decor 425 is guaranteed for a period of 12 months from the date of purchase. Subject to the terms listed below the guarantee will provide for the repair of, or at BT’s or its agent’s discretion the option to replace the BT Decor 425, or any component thereof, which is identified as faulty or below standard, or as a result of inferior workmanship or materials. Products over 28 days old from the date of purchase may be replaced with a refurbished or repaired product. The conditions of this guarantee are: The guarantee shall only apply to defects that occur within 12 months from the date of purchase, provided that the equipment is sent to the repair address within this period. This guarantee does not cover any faults or defects caused by accidents, misuse, fair wear and tear, neglect, tampering with the equipment, or any attempt at adjustment or repair other than approved agents. This guarantee does not affect your statutory rights. 31

Calls are charged at national rates. In the unlikely event of a defect occurring, please return the product, with the receipt, to the place of purchase. Outside of the 12 month guarantee period: If your product needs repair after the guarantee period has ended, the repair must meet the approval requirements for connection to the telephone network. We recommend that you call the Helpline on 0870 605 8047 for information on our recommended repair agents. Returning your phone If the Helpline is unable to remedy your problem they will ask you to return the product. Where possible, pack the product in its original packaging. All parts must be returned including the mains power adaptor. (Please note that we cannot take responsibility for goods damaged in transit.) All items of telephone equipment have a Ringer Equivalence Number (REN), which is used to calculate the number of items which may be connected to any one telephone line. Your Decor 425 has a REN of 1. A total REN of 4 is allowed, if the total REN of 4 is exceeded, the telephones may not ring. With different telephone types there is no guarantee of ringing, even when the REN is less than 4. R&TTE This product is intended for use within the UK for connection to the public telephone network and compatible switchboards. This equipment complies with the essential requirements for the Radio Equipment and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment Directive (1999/5/EC). Declaration of Conformance Hereby, Suncorp Technologies, declares that this Decor 425 is in compliance with the essential requirements and other relevant provisions of Directive 1999/5/EC. If in doubt please consult your service provider. Recall The R Recall button is used with switchboards, certain BT Calling Features and other network services, such as telephone banking. Wall-mounting your Decor 425 (Optional) 1. Using a 3mm bit, drill two holes in the wall 70mm vertically apart. 2. If you do not have a modern phone socket, call Freefone 0800 800 150 and ask for a BT engineer to come and fit the correct one. This is a chargeable service. Location You need to place your Decor 425 close enough to the phone and mains power sockets so that both cords will reach. Setting up the phone 1. Plug the power adaptor into the left side of your Decor 425. 2. Route the power cord through the groove as shown below. Lift the handset, listen for the dial tone, then dial the number. End a call 1. Replace the handset. Receiving calls When your phone rings: If the ringer switch is set to Ringer Off (see page 7), the phone will not ring when you receive a call. 1. Lift the handset to take the call. Redial 1. Lift the handset. 2. Press Redial . The last number called is dialled. If the last number dialled exceeds 32 digits it will not be held in the redial memory

Press and hold 2. Release When storing numbers in the memory you will not hear confirmation beeps as you press the keypad buttons. When storing numbers you will still hear the dial tone and may hear recorded messages from the telephone exchange. Please ignore this, it does not affect storing numbers. . Your caller cannot hear you. to talk to your caller again. Storing memory numbers Up to 10 phone numbers can be stored in the memory. Each number can be up to 16 digits long. 1. Lift the handset. You will hear the dialling tone. 2. Press Store . 3. Enter the phone number you want to store. 4. Press Store again. WX 5. Press a number between 0 - 9 on the keypad where you want to store the phone number. YZ Use the directory label to make a note of the numbers you have stored in the memory. Secrecy Secrecy The number is stored and you can replace the handset. To insert a pause when storing a number When storing a number, press (Redial) where you want to enter a pause. Changing stored numbers Repeat the steps for storing a number. The new number will replace the existing stored number.

Adjusting the loudspeaker volume 1. Use button to increase or decrease the loudspeaker volume. Vol Outgoing message The outgoing message is the message a caller hears when your BT Decor 425 answers a call. There are two pre-recorded outgoing messages that you can choose from, outgoing message 1 allows callers to leave a message, whilst outgoing message 2 does not. OGM – Outgoing Message. 15

Your call cannot be taken at the moment, so please leave your message after the tone”. Selecting the OGM 1. Press and hold . You will hear “Please select outgoing message”. Ans on off 2. Press Skip for OGM1 (Answer and Record) or Skip for OGM2 (Answer only). The selected OGM is played back and instructions are given on how to record a new outgoing message. ᮤ OGM2 (Answer only) – pre-recorded message “Hello. Your call cannot be taken at the moment and you cannot leave a message, so please call later”. Use either of these OGMs, or if you prefer you can record your own, see opposite. ᮣ Recording your own OGM1 (Answer and Record) Your OGM can be up to 3 minutes long. 1. Press and hold OGM2 is ‘Answer only’ so your message should not invite callers to leave a message. Ans on off . You will hear “Please select outgoing message”. 2. Press ᮤ Skip to re-record OGM1 (Answer and Record) The current OGM is played back to you. You are then invited to record your own OGM. 3. Press and hold ᮤ Skip to begin recording. 4. When you hear “Please select outgoing message” release the button. Ans on off 2. Press ᮤ Skip to delete OGM1. Or Press Skip ᮣ to delete OGM2. The chosen OGM begins to play. 3. During playback press Del . Your Decor 425 plays back the default pre-recorded OGM. Your Decor 425 will stop recording if: • A caller pauses for more than 4 seconds when leaving a message. • The memory becomes full during recording. • The incoming message lasts longer than 3 minutes. Indefinite message back-up Your Decor 425 saves all messages indefinitely until you delete them. Your messages will not be lost in the event of a power cut. Memory full If the answering machine memory becomes full the message indicator will flash rapidly. You will not be able to record any more caller’s messages, a new OGM or memos. The BT Decor 425 will announce memory full.

To clear space in the memory you will need to delete some or all of the messages. See ‘To delete individual messages’, on page 21. Answer delay The answer delay is the number of times your Decor 425 rings before answering calls. It is pre-set to 6 rings. You can choose from between 2 and 9 rings or Time Saver. 1. Press and hold Skip . You hear the settings. ᮣ 2. Release Skip when you hear the setting you want You will hear the new setting confirmed. ᮣ Checking the answer delay setting Press Skip . You will hear the setting. ᮣ What is Time Saver? If you access your answering machine remotely and you have set Time Saver mode, your Decor 425 will answer calls after 6 rings if no new messages have been recorded, or 2 rings if new messages have been recorded. So, you can hang-up after 2 rings knowing you have no new messages and save the cost of the call. See page 23 for more information on remote access. 19

Memos are stored on the answering machine like caller’s messages and can be up to 12 minutes long (maximum recording time). 1. Press and hold ᮤ Skip . You will hear “Please speak after the tone. To end recording, release the button”. 2. Still holding microphone. ᮤ Skip speak your memo clearly into the 3. To end recording release the ᮤ Skip button. Message indicator When you have new messages the message indicator will flash. The LED will flash when any messages are received, regardless of whether they have been listened to. The light is on permanently when the answering machine is on and there are no messages received. The light is off only when the answering machine is off.

The number of stored messages is announced. Your messages and memos are then played back in the order they were received together with the day and time of recording. While your messages are being played back: Press ᮤ Skip once to replay the current message Press ᮤ Skip twice to return to the previous message. Press Skip ᮣ Press Stop to skip forward to the next message. to stop playback. When you reach the last message you will hear, “End of messages. To delete all messages, press delete”. Deleting individual messages During playback of the relevant message: 1. Press Del . You will hear, “Message deleted” and the next message will be played. 21

Deleting all messages 1. Wait until all messages have been played back and you hear “End of messages. To delete all messages, press delete”. 2. During the next 8 seconds, press Del . You will hear “All messages deleted”. To screen calls, make sure the answer machine is switched on and that the loudspeaker volume is set to an audible level. Call screening When your answering machine takes an incoming call, you can listen to the caller over the loudspeaker. You can then decide whether or not to take the call in person. 1. When the phone rings, let the machine answer the call and wait until the caller begins to leave their message. 2. If you choose to speak to the caller in person, pick up your handset. Your Decor 425 will automatically stop recording.

Before you can access your messages, you must enter a 3-digit security code. The pre-set security code is 000, but you can change this to a more memorable number. Check your security code 1. Press Del . The security code is announced. Change your security code 1. Press and hold Del . “Security code setting” is announced. 2. Release Del . Remote operation 1. Call your Decor 425. 2. After listening to the outgoing message press on the phone you are using. You will hear, “Please enter your security code”. If you do not enter the security code within 8 seconds or if you enter the wrong security code you will hear, “Incorrect security code, please enter your security code”. If you enter the wrong code again you will hear, “Incorrect security code, thank you for calling” and the line will be disconnected. 3. You have 8 seconds to enter your security code. 4. You will hear “You have ‘x’ new messages” and message playback begins. 5. At the end of playback you will hear “To hear the main menu, press 1”. You now have 8 seconds to enter the main menu before your phone hangs up. 6. Follow the instructions in the main menu to control your answering machine (see ‘Remote access menu’).

Please check that your BT Decor 425 has been correctly set up, see page 6, before ringing the BT Decor 425 Helpline. No dialling tone Check your line/power cord connections. You dial and nothing happens You may be connected to an exchange which has not been modernised. Call BT on Freefone 0800 800 150 for information. The phone does not ring Check the ringer is not turned off. (See page 7). Are there too many other phones or faxes connected to the same line? (See ‘How many telephones can you have?’, on page 33.) Noise interference coming through the loudspeaker Make sure your Decor 425 is not placed too near another mobile or cordless phone. Some cordless telephones and payphones are not compatible. Using an unauthorised power supply unit will invalidate your guarantee and may damage the answer machine. The item code for the power supply unit is 010198. Do not open your Decor 425. This could expose you to high voltages or other risks. Environmental Do not expose to direct sunlight. We recommend that you do not place the product on antique/veneered wood to avoid damage. Do not stand your product on carpets or other surfaces which generate fibres, or place it in locations preventing a free flow of air over it’s surfaces. Do not submerge any part of your product in water and do not use it in damp or humid conditions, such as in bathrooms. Do not expose your product to fire, explosive or other hazardous conditions. There is a slight chance that your phone could be damaged by an electrical storm. We recommend that you unplug the power and telephone line cord for the duration of the storm, as damage is not covered by the guarantee.

Subject to the terms listed below the guarantee will provide for the repair of, or at BT’s or its agent’s discretion the option to replace the BT Decor 425, or any component thereof, which is identified as faulty or below standard, or as a result of inferior workmanship or materials. Products over 28 days old from the date of purchase may be replaced with a refurbished or repaired product. The conditions of this guarantee are: The guarantee shall only apply to defects that occur within 12 months from the date of purchase, provided that the equipment is sent to the repair address within this period. All items of telephone equipment have a Ringer Equivalence Number (REN), which is used to calculate the number of items which may be connected to any one telephone line. Your Decor 425 has a REN of 1. A total REN of 4 is allowed, if the total REN of 4 is exceeded, the telephones may not ring. If in doubt please consult your service provider. Recall The R Recall button is used with switchboards, certain BT Calling Features and other network services, such as telephone banking. Wall-mounting your Decor 425 (Optional) 1. Using a 3mm bit, drill two holes in the wall 70mm vertically apart. 2. Route the line and power cords through the back of your Decor 425 as shown below. Fit the wall-mounting bracket to the base of the phone. 4. To stop the handset falling when the base is wall-mounted, rotate the handset clip 180°. 35
