RESEARCH DESIGN
Meaning
Research design is a blueprint of a scientific study. It includes research methodologies,
tools, and techniques to conduct the research .it helps to identify and address the
problem that may rise during the process of research and analysis.
Definition
According to william zikmund:
‘’Research design is defined as a master plan specifying the methods and
procedures for collection and analyzing the needed information’’.

EXPLORATORY RESEARCH DESIGN:-Exploratory research is defined as a research used to
investigate a problem which is not clearly defined.it is conducted to have a better
understanding of the existing research problem , but will not provide conclusive results.
Types of exploratory design:-
1. Expert survey :- In Survey of Expert's Opinions, the specialized group of people in the
concerned fields, from both inside and outside the organization, are approached and
asked to give their opinions on sales trend.
2. Literature review :- A literature review is not just a summary of everything you have
read on the topic. It is a critical analysis of the existing research relevant to your topic,
and you should show how the literature relates to your topic and identify any gaps in
the area of research.
3.Pilot study:-A pilot study asks whether something can be done, should the
researchers proceed with it, and if so, how. However, a pilot study also has a specific
design feature; it is conducted on a smaller scale than the main or full-scale study.
4.Projective techniques:-Projective techniques allow respondents to project their
subjective or true opinions and beliefs onto other people or even objects. The
respondent's real feelings are then inferred from what s/he says about others.
Projective techniques are normally used during individual or small group interviews.
CONCLUSIVE RESEARCH DESIGN:-
conclusive research design is used to obtain information that can be used to
reach conclusions or make decisions. The data collected in this research design
is generally quantitative in nature and therefore takes distinct numerical values
1. Descriptive research:-Descriptive research aims to accurately and
systematically describe a population, situation or phenomenon. It can answer
what, where, when and how questions, but not why questions. A descriptive
research design can use a wide variety of research methods to investigate one
or more variables.
Types of descriptive research :-
1. Cross-sectional:- A cross sectional study is a type of research design in which you
collect data from many different individuals at a single point in time. In cross -sectional
research , you observe variables without influencing them.
2.Longitudinal study:- In a longitudinal study, researchers repeatedly examine
the same individuals to detect any changes that might
occur over a period of time.
CAUSAL RESEARCH DESIGN:-It’s a type of research that examines if there’s a cause-
and- effect relationship between two separate events. causal research is also
known as explanatory research.
1.Pre-Experimental Design:- The simplest form of research design . In a pre
experiment either a single group or multiple groups are observed subsequent
to some agent or treatment presumed to cause change.
2.Quasi Experimental Design:- it is a studies that aim to evaluate interventions but that do
not use randomization.
3. True Experimental Design:-True experimental design is a statistical approach to establishing a
cause-and-effect relationship between variables .this research method is the most accurate
forms which provides substantial backing to support the existence of relationships.
