CAD/CAM Domain
Let’s Get Started!
Introduction to the CAD/CAM
• Computer-aided design (CAD) involves
creating object models defined by geometrical
parameters, using a computer system.
• Computer-aided manufacturing (CAM)
involves the use of software to control
manufacturing tools and machinery.
Advantages of using CAD/CAM
There are several benefits of using CAD systems
over traditional drafting methods that use
rulers, squares, compasses, etc. Computer
models designed using CAD are three
dimensional and can be rotated on any axis,
enabling the designer properly analyze the
model as it was a real object. The use of
CAD/CAM software also reduces the time
required for production planning and allocation
of jobs to various resources.
There are numerous benefits of using CAD,
some of them are mentioned below:
• The chances of occurring mistakes in a design
can be avoided
• Reduces the manufacturing time
• Helps in better documentation of the design
• Quality of design is improved
• It becomes easier to apply new ideas in the
design
Features of the CAD software:
• Zoom in: The CAD software has an excellent
feature of zooming in the component design.
• Layering: This feature is used to overlay the
machined part on the casted part.
• Checking interference: This feature is used to
check that the various components of the
assembled structure occupy the designed space.
• Animation capability: This feature allows to
perform an animation operation of the designed
components.
The concept of CIM
Computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM)
combines both computer-aided design (CAD)
and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) and
provides a completely automated and error-free
manufacturing process. The CIM approach
increases the speed of the manufacturing
process and is widely used in the automotive,
aviation, and ship building industries.
Thank You!
