The Senate of the Consolidated Students
WHEREAS, the Consolidated Students of the University of Nevada (CSUN) represents
all 25,000+ undergraduate students enrolled at the University of Nevada Las Vegas; and
WHEREAS, the Student Body of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas elects the
Consolidated Students of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (CSUN) Senate as
representatives, whose numerous responsibilities include voicing and lobbying student concerns
to their elected officials in local, state, and federal levels; and
WHEREAS, approximately 340 police reports where filed with UNLV Police Services
between the dates of 27 May 2017 and 22 November 2017; and
WHEREAS, 59% of these reports were for theft or burglary, 14% of these reports where
physical altercations, 13% of these reports were traffic related, 9% of these reports were related
to vandalism, 3% of these reports were sexually related, 1% of these reports were related to
narcotics and/or alcohol, 1% of these reports were for arson, bomb threats, fraud, and
kidnapping; and
WHEREAS, 37% of these reports took place in University common areas, 32% of these
reports took place in parking lots and garages, 13% of these reports took place in the Lied
Library, 9% of these reports took place in campus residential areas, 4% of these reports took
place in the Student Union, 3% of these reports took place in the Student Recreation and
Wellness Center, 1% of these reports took place at Sam Boyd Stadium, 1% of these reports took
place at the Thomas and Mack Center; and
WHEREAS, there is no official data available regarding video surveillance specifically
pertaining to University parking areas or residential areas; and
WHEREAS, campus lighting continues to be an issue on the North side of campus; and
WHEREAS, UNLV is scheduled to receive approximately $7.5 million which are to be
spent on capital improvements,
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the UNLV CSUN Senate, on behalf of
the 25,000+ undergraduate students of UNLV:
• Urges members of CSUN to actively advocate in favor of improvements to
UNLV campus safety; AND
• Urges University officials to make improvements to, as well as install new
infrastructure and equipment regarding campus safety to promote the safety and
well-being of this University’s faculty and students, AND
• Urges UNLV administration and finance to allocate funding and request state
funding for the modernization and relocation of surveillance cameras; AND
• Urges UNLV administration and officials to make implementation of robust video
surveillance and security in the residence halls and parking garages a top priority;
AND
• Urges UNLV administration and officials to take action to allocate funds for the
improvement of the lighting specifically on the North side of campus; AND
• Requests that the UNLV administration and officials submit a committed timeline
to the CSUN Senate and the student body regarding the implementation of these
improvements no later than the first week of the Fall 2018 semester.
• Requests that the project manager assigned to CSUN by David Frommer make
monthly reports to the CSUN Senate on the status of campus security projects
until the satisfactory completion of said projects has been verified by the Chair of
the CSUN Health and Safety Committee.
