Capital is required for industrial activities and can come from individuals, private companies, states, or corporations. Companies may merge to increase profits by combining with other companies. There are two main types of mergers: vertical mergers which combine companies that produce different goods/services for the same finished product, and horizontal mergers which combine similar companies. High technology industries are located in dedicated industrial areas for research and innovation with low environmental impact, while industrial parks locate factories and plants on the outskirts of cities near transport links and mostly consist of light industry.
