Early Life
Carlos Slim Helú was born on January 28, 1940, in
Mexico City, Mexico, to parents of Lebanese descent.
He was one of six children, and his father was a
successful dry goods business owner.
Slim and his siblings were taught business from an early
age by their father and by the age of 12, Slim bought
shares in a Mexican bank. Although his father died in
1953, Slim continued to work in his business until he
was 17.

He attended the National Autonomous University of Mexico,
to study civil engineering. He also taught algebra and linear
programming while at school and went into business
immediately after graduating

Between 2010 and 2013, 'Forbes' magazine ranked Slim as
the richest man in the world, on their annual list of
billionaires. By the end of 2014, his net worth was estimated
at US$72.6 billion.

Current Position
Based on the 2015 Forbes billionaire data, with a net worth
of $77.1 billion (equal to 6.1% of Mexico’s GDP), Mexican
telecom mogul Carlos Slim Helú kept his #2 position in the
world’s billionaires rankings for the second consecutive
year. In 2014, Slim lost the richest-person-on-the-planet title
to Microsoft founder Bill Gates who, according to Forbes,
has held the title for 16 of the past 21 years.
