This document describes a final project analyzing the finite element analysis of structures. It presents methods for numerically solving the impact of an elastic bar against a rigid wall using explicit and implicit time integration. The methods section details developing the governing equations and Galerkin formulation to arrive at semi-discrete and fully discrete equations. Results show the approximate displacement and stress over time using explicit integration and the exact solution using implicit integration. Accuracy is assessed using error norms with discussion of convergence rates.
