The Applied and Participatory Paradigm focuses on applied research that aims to evaluate problems, recommend solutions, and collaborate with local communities to address both causes and symptoms of issues through democratic and emancipatory means. Researchers using this paradigm employ a variety of methods and strategies as needed, including decolonizing methodologies, case studies, action research, and program evaluation, to work with communities through a process of identifying needs, investigating problems, suggesting recommendations, implementing plans, and continuously improving. Quality is assessed based on pragmatic success, empowerment, and the transferability of solutions to other contexts.
