Your first activity has been designed to familiarize you with GIS (Geographic Information System), and to teach you to hand in your work electronically. Follow the steps EXACTLY!

Go to your desktools icon . Find the ArcView icon , click on it and drag and drop it onto your desktop. Double click on the ArcView icon, and open the program.

Open with a new view . You will be asked if you want to add data to the view now. Select Yes .

In the drive section, select the x: drive . Select arcview data , then select arccanada31_d1 (d), select national , select shp . From the list on the side of the shp directory, select canada2001.shp . Change to x: drive

An open window called View1 will appear. In the menu on the left, click on the small grey box to turn the Canada 2001 shp theme on. A map of Canada (in green) will appear in your view screen. Click here to see the theme turned on Then click here to Maximize the screen

From the title bar in the upper left, select View . Select properties.

change the Name to : Capital Cities, Provinces and Territories of Canada and change the distance units to kilometers . Select OK . Change Name Change Distance Units

Now it is time to add some data to your map. Click on the Add Theme button (if you are not in x: drive, follow step 3 above). Scroll down in the left menu until you find lakes.shp then click once on it. to highlight it. Press and hold the shift key, then click once on cities.shp . Click on the OK button. Both themes should be added to your View legend. Click on the grey boxes to turn them on.

Click on the cities.shp lettering. You will see that a raisied box appears around the cities.shp theme. The box means that cities is the active theme . The active theme is the one that any changes, or labels that you put on your map will be added to. If you turn it off later, they will disappear!

In the upper left title bar, select theme , then select edit legend . The Legend Editor menu will appear

Use the pull down arrows at the right to set the legend type to Graduated Colour. Set the Classification Field to capital. Then set Normalize by to Capital .

Change the size until you are satisfied with your points. Click apply. Your map should change to the new settings. Close the legend editor. Double click on the red dot , and select a new symbol and colour from the menu screen that appears.

Make lakes the active theme (single click on lakes.shp lettering). Now you are going to add some lake name labels to your map. Click and hold the label button . A drop down menu will appear with several label choices. Drag down to the second button . Label the 5 Great Lakes by clicking on the lake, and dragging to the area where you want the label to appear. If you do not like where you have put the label, you have to select the pointer tool , click on the label and press the delete key . Make sure your label lines do not cross! pointer tool label button

Save your work by selecting File from the upper menu, then save project as , switch the drive to the h: drive and then in the file name field call it yourfirstnamelastinitialcanada For example timmykcanada Then click OK . File

Make cities your active theme. Label the cities. When all of the cities are labeled, you will see that some have two names. You will have to delete the labels and replace them with a text label . Click and hold the text button. Drag down to the third button click on the city, and drag out your label. A text box will appear, type in the name, and click OK

It is time to add another theme. Click the add theme button , select the x: drive, arcview data, arc k-12 , and then the Canada directory. In the left hand menu, select the prov99.shp theme. Double click on it to add it to your view legend. It will appear in the top of the legend. Provinces and Territories

Turn on the theme (check box) and see what happens. (Don’t Panic!). Click on the prov99.shp theme, and drag it to the bottom of the menu. Drop it. See what happens. Now turn off the canada2001.shp theme (uncheck it). See what happens. Remember that the themes are stacked like a pile of pancakes, smallest should be on the top, biggest at the bottom.

When you are satisfied with your View, it is time to put this all into a Layout! At the top menu select View , then layout . Click OK to accept the Landscape layout. Arc View will automatically produce a new map layout for you.

Double click on the scale to change miles to kilometers .

Single click on the legend , then grab a corner frame handle and shrink it a little. Move (click hold and drag) the legend to the side so you can make the map larger.

Double click on the map , and the frame corners should appear. Grab (click and hold) a frame handle, and enlarge the map. Position it properly. Single click on the title and reduce the size so that it is not touching the blue box. Anything over or touching the blue will not print!

Click on the text tool pull down to the fourth button to add a text box with your name in it. Position it discreetly in a corner. From the top menu select Layout . Select Hide Grid . Repeat and Hide Margin .

Minimize your layout. Select Window from the upper menu, and then select Layout 1 . Maximize layout 1 . All dots and the blue frame should be gone.

Bonus (if you have time or skip to slide 28) Switch to the View screen. Click the add theme button then select arcview data , then select arccanada31_d1 (d), select national , select shp . From the list on the side of the shp directory, select faults.shp .

Bonus (if you have time or skip to slide 28) Turn the theme on by checking it, then use the measure tool to find the distance from Toronto to the nearest fault line (in km!) Insert a text box on your layout that states the distance from Toronto to the nearest fault line.

Now it is time to hand- in your project. Minimize your Arc View. Open your first class , and open the 555 Geography CGC1P icon. Open the Hand-in folders (in red) and open correct folder for your class . Open the Canada GIS folder.

Minimize all screens except for the Canada GIS folder. Open my computer , and find your file on the h: drive. Click on it once, hold and drag it into the Canada GIS hand-in folder. It should pull up a file transfer popup screen. When it is completed click close. Make sure that your file appears in the folder for YOUR Period !
