Samantas were powerful landlords and warrior chiefs in different parts of the subcontinent in the 7th century. They had to bring gifts to kings and support them militarily. Over time, some samantas grew powerful enough to declare independence as maha-samantas or regional lords. Dantidurga, a Rashtrakuta chief, performed a ritual to become a warrior caste and overthrew his Chalukya overlord. Other emerging dynasties included those founded by Brahmins like the Kadambas of Karnataka and the Gurjara-Pratihara of Rajasthan who took up arms.
