This document discusses fundamental theories of damages and failure mechanisms in machinery parts. It begins by explaining the three main categories of failure modes - obsolescence, surface degradation, and accidents. Surface degradation, mainly corrosion and mechanical wear, accounts for most machinery losses. Corrosion and wear and their causes are then described in more detail. Four main failure mechanisms are discussed - abrasion, corrosion, fatigue, and boundary lubrication. The chapter concludes by identifying eight root causes of machinery damage.
