Challenges of Technology in Nursing Education
Challenges for teachers
 Learning how to use a variety of technology
applications
 Teachers knowingly or unknowingly are
curriculum developers
 Expanding content knowledge
 Taking on new roles
 Responding to individual students.
Contd…
 Fear of technology.
 Fear of the unknowns with new technologies.
 Scared to experiment with new technologies.
 Think they have to learn it all at once.
 Lack of training opportunities.
 Lack of technology support.
 Lack of time to attend training to learn new
technologies
Contd…
 Lack of time to practice with new
technologies.
 Lack of time to create lesson plans that
incorporate technology.
 Some teachers practice a "learned
helplessness" - it's easier to ask questions
than to try to figure things out for themselves.
Contd…
 Something more for teachers to add to their
already busy day.
 Lack of technology in the school.
 Students will know more than me.
 Learning they must operate the equipment
rather than asking the media specialist to do
it.
 No support from administrators.
Challenges of Administrator
1. 1:1 : means one device per student, but in
reality the number of devices per student is
much higher.
2. BYOD : Bring Your Own Device is a
common trend many schools all over the US
have either already integrated or are
considering. It’s a more budget friendly
option than the school providing devices for
every student.
3. Security is the big challenge every school
encounters and one of the biggest reasons
Contd…
4. Cloud Based Mobile Learning ; Making
sure your school wireless network is
application aware so you can limit the student
streaming say an HD movie on Netflix.
5. Pace of Change : Not all schools can keep
up with the rapidly changing technology.
 Distraction : Many teachers believe that
smart phones and tablets, with internet
connectivity and text messaging services, can
merely be a source of distraction for students
as opposed to a learning tool.
Contd…
 Some schools have technology, but it
remains unused.
 One PC in the school.
 Too much to learn so they just don't even
start.
 No technology coordinator in the school.
 Can not train everyone at once - how decide
who gets training first in the school ? ·
 Change is difficult !
Challenges of Technology in Nursing Education
Challenges of Technology in Nursing Education
Challenges for students
 Multimedia : Over three fourths of students
are using multimedia in the classroom, and
this number is constantly increasing.
 Technology Out-thinking the Instruction :
Discrepancies as to how much of a crutch
technology can be to a student. E.g. apps
that supply quick, accessible answers for
problems that a student should actually be
thinking about in greater depth.

Negatives
 Students will loose interest on reading real
books, newspaper on long run
 Students lack skills in writing, handwriting
inappropriate
 Learning Innovation vs Improved Test
Performance : Children use laptops and
tablets for their work and integrate things like
Face book groups into regular projects.
Unfortunately, the school is also suffering
from low standardized test scores.
 Online exams are based on open book
 Parents may not like children sitting on

Key Effects of IT Age
 Digitalization
 Automation
 Robotization
 Miniaturization
 Specialization
 Customization
 Globalization
 Mutation
 Commoditization
 Disintermediation
 Modularization
 Technological Determinism
 Acronymization or TCCTA
 Tendency to Create Colorful
Technical Acronyms.
 If you have a problem with that,
join SPAM or Society to Prevent
Acronym Memorization.
The only constant feature in this world is CHANGE
While all change may not lead to progress, there can be no
progress without CHANGE
Take home message
Optional slides
1. How can schools afford to purchase enough
multimedia-capable, Internet connected
computers so that a classroom machine is
always available for every two to three
students?
2. How can schools afford enough computers
and telecommunications to sustain new
models of teaching and learning?
3. How can many educators disinterested or
phobic about computers and communications
be induced to adopt new technology-based
models of teaching and learning?
Optional slides
 4. How do we prove to communities that new,
technology-based models of teaching and
learning are better than current instructional
approaches?
 5. How can educational technology increase
equity rather than widen current gaps
between “haves” and “have-nots?”
 6. If we use technology well, what should we
expect as “typical” student performance?

Editor's Notes

  • #34: IPS Officer Himself Copied Karim handed over his wallet and a cell phone to them from his trouser pockets, apologizing for forgetting to leave the handset in his car," the officer said. "But he had concealed another phone and wireless earpieces in his socks and a miniature camera in his shirt," said the officer. Twenty minutes after the exam begun at 9 am, IB officers entered the hall, searched Karim and recovered a cellphone, which he had concealed under his seat, and a camera and earpieces. "Karim admitted during interrogation that he took photographs of the question paper and sent them to his wife, who relayed the answers to him," the officer told TOI. While Karim was booked under the Sections 420 (cheating and dishonesty) and 120b (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC and under provisions of the IT Act, his wife Joy was arrested from Hyderabad.
