MATURITY LEVEL OF HCI
Muhammad Najib DS, S.Kom., M.T
BACKGROUND
HCI is a discipline that is devoted to helping people meet their needs
and goals by using accessibility, meaning and satisfaction with
computer technology
HCI paradigm changed little at the beginning of the new millennium (in
2000), which was built seriously to serve the development of the needs
of people whose lives are more mobile and lifestyle are interconnected
with increased expectations to support their lifestyles as a result of the
emergence of computer technology
From this condition, HCI will reach its maturity level
How to measure the maturity level of HCI
There are several different perspectives for measuring maturity levels
of HCI:
 Technology-based perspective: can be assessed on interaction
technologies.
 Model-based perspective: can be assessed on the interaction models
through their predictive power.
 Process-based perspective: can be assessed on its strength resulting in
efficiency and effectiveness. One of the well-known is the CMM (capability
maturity model) developed by SEI (the software engineering institute).
Present Levels of HCI
Maturity
Level 1 HCI: basic usability
 Includes a mixture of support to meet needs such as ease of use, ease of
learning, protection of errors, finding errors, and efficiency of user
performance on the use of computer technology.
 Examples of this stage: the use of graphical user interfaces (GUI),
interaction metaphors, direct manipulation, point-and-click input devices,
user interface management systems, GOMS (models, operators, methods,
and selection rules) models, and design standards.
 HCI is aimed at the highest level of needs and purposes for use.
Present Levels of HCI
Maturity (cont.)
Level 2 HCI: collaborative, organizational, and role-based interaction
 At this level, computers are not only used for work, but are used to
connect between users and computers. So that work can be done
anywhere and anytime.
 Examples of these levels: the internet, enterprise computing systems,
decision support systems, and research in the field of computer-supported
cooperative work (CSCW).
 The HCI scope is expanded on organizational structure issues, work
environment, organizational definitions, customization of processes, and
work teams
Future HCI: Level 3:
Individualized and Holictic
Interaction
 The future computer environment
 Individualized and holistic interaction design
 Moving toward holistic interaction
The Future of Computer
Environment (cont.)
Computer technology will shift from general-purposes machines to special-
purpose tools to support a specific task and information dissemination.
This technology will support the use of smart cards, active whiteboards,
home financial centers, active badges, wearable devices, implanted health
aids, sensory networks, integrated media, virtual environments, intelligent
agents, and highly mobile computing devices
The Future of Computer
Environment
The future of the computer environment will be ambitious, invisible, inherent,
real, virtual, active, integrated, interconnected, interoperable, and mobile
These environmental characteristics are: always alive, always in hand,
pervasive, and mixed
In this environment, the human body will be mixed with equipment through
permanent use or installation, and humans will be in hybrid physical-virtual
space populations
Individualized and Holistic
Interaction Design
Humans will be more individual because technology will be tightly integrated
in every interaction with experience around us, or in short, technology will
provide all our needs without having to interact with other individuals.
Holistic interaction is a concept for an interaction design approach that will
help the development of productivity, performance, safety, cooperation,
effective habits, and individual growth by respecting one's personal needs,
goals and lifestyle, or in short, holistic considering all the things around
humans are physical and inner
Individualized and Holistic
Interaction Design (cont.)
Holistic interaction design can also be directed at issues related to an
individual's emotions and motivations.
Working in a holistic environment will increase overlapping between fields of
work, for example: HCI designers, architects, interior designers, fashion
designers, organizational and business process specialists, therapists, and
the like will work together to create new and integrated approaches that it is
holistic
Moving Toward Holistic
Interaction
 To achieve a holistic level of interaction, it cannot be
done suddenly but must go through several changes
that preceded it, namely:
 Changes in engineering
 Arrange the human interface
 The information-interaction counselor
Changes in Engineering / Engineering
Process engineering plays an important role in the design and development
of human-computer systems
Engineering is one of the tools to achieve an ambitious computer
environment, where HCI design will be increasingly broad to answer
interaction design issues.
Stringing the Human Interface
Described how the relationship between HCL and various types of
engineering with the level of user needs to be addressed.
An HCI can be said to reach a stage of maturity if there is a greater
separation between interaction design and engineering, and an HCI design
growth will be carried out outside of engineering.
Stringing the Human Interface (cont.)
Assembling the human interface is the presence of 2 software units that can
be designed and implemented individually, meaning:
 Each unit has a code that can be separated in several levels.
 Each unit cannot be developed together.
 Each unit cannot be designed and developed by the same individual or
team.
This reflects human differences in terms of interaction style, capabilities, and
limitations.
The Information-Interaction Counselor
In an ambitious, integrated, communication, media, commercial computer
environment, entertainment that is connected with technology, makes it
difficult for people to choose which combination of technologies gives
maximum satisfaction according to their needs.
The way that can help is to use the information-interaction counselors (IICs).
The Information-Interaction Counselor
(cont.)
IICs are software that together with the user will choose which combination
of technologies should be used.
IICs are like experts who are very experts in their fields.
The example that now exists is CAD (computer-aided design).
Thank You ..
