❑ Frankenstein , a text that is part Gothic novel
and philosophical it also considered an early
example of scientific fiction.
❑ It narrates the dreadful consequences that arise
after a scientist has artificially created a human
being.
❑ The man – made monster in this novel, inspire
a similar creature in numerous American horror
films.

Monster born?
❖ Victor learns about
modern science.
❖ Monster is created by
victor while at the
university of Ingolstadt.
❖ Victor brings a hideous
monster to life.
❖ Monster are the only
words victor describe
his creation.
❑ Shelley described Frankenstein's
monster as 8 – foot- tall,
hideously ugly creation, with
translucent yellowish skin pulled
so taut over the body that it
“barely disguised the workings
of the arteries and muscles
underneath”.
❑ Watery, glowing eyes, flowing
black hair, black lips, and
prominent white teeth.
❑ Very ugly looking but very
sensitive and emotional.
Monster Rejected by his creator
and Society
❑ Formed into a hideous and gigantic creature, the monster
faces rejection and fear from his creator and society.
❑ Victor refuses to admit to anyone the horror of what he has
created, even as he sees the ramifications of his creative act
spiraling out of control.
❑ The creature of victor turns to monster because it can not
find understanding and compassion in the society.
❑ Shelley wants her readers to understand the feelings of
creature which knows no compassion or understanding.
❑ The monster created by victor only physically, in reality it
was created by the society.

“I had never yet seen a being
resembling me, or who claimed
any intercourse with me. What was I?
● Monster tries to make sense of his identity
and origin.
“ I was benevolent and good ;
Misery made me a fiend.”
● Monster explain the origin of his violent
behavior.
● He makes clear that he was not initially a bad
individual,but that because he was abandoned,
neglected, and lonely, he began to lash out.
