Characteristics Of The New Era
Of Leadership

The last decade is characterized for the inclusion of visionary
new leadership styles and the disruption caused by startups
and entrepreneurs to the way traditional businesses are
normally conducted. Technology has seeped into every
corner of the industry, and it would be naive to think that it
wouldn’t affect the role leadership plays today in the world of
business. We can safely assert that management built upon
traditional leadership methods is no longer viable to maintain
the level of effectiveness required by this new industry and the
professionals we expect to lead.
What are the characteristics of a new leader? What is
expected of these professionals in order to upkeep with the
demands of a new environment that continues to require for
management to keep the accomplishment of the mission a
priority while at the same time never neglecting the wellbeing
of employees and their constant professional development?
Companies all over the world continue to try new styles of
leadership that can seem outrageous to some and
innovative to others, as the only constant we can visibly
identify is continuous change in the way we approach
management and how it is important for new technologies
to guide the revolution.
What are the characteristics of these new leaders? Today
in David Kiger’s Blog, we want to take a look at some of
those traits and trend that pave the way for rising leaders
and how they have adapted to the new environment and
how they go about making it work everyday.
Venture away from the norm
The normal control and command structure that traditional
management is known for, is not as effective as it used to
be a few years back. Today people respond more positively
to inclusive and supportive leadership styles and not only
that, but they have also shown that they further support the
mission in a more effective manner. Your approach to
business must always stay fresh and innovative and that it
seeks to empower your workforce and show they that they
are an important part of the organization.
Growing your own leaders
Companies should seriously consider the development of
their leadership from within. It has been proven that results
are much more consistent when the leadership is grown
inside the company because not only there is a sense of
pride and ownership already installed in team members,
but they also understand the fabric of the organization, the
different levels of operation and responsibility and they
have the insight to understand which changes are effective
and needed in order to streamline processes and satisfy
customers.
Open channels of communication
People must have all the necessary tools and conditions for
their success so they can produce results. Open channels
of communications can empower team members by
knowing they are appreciated and included in the
decision-making process of the organization and also that
their input is heard and seriously considered. Leaders who
open their doors benefit from their participative style by not
only hearing concerns from the operators who best
understand the process but also by instilling trust in their
team and building the morale.
Measurement techniques
Measurements are important in many ways, as you cannot
gauge the improvement or decline of something that you
cannot measure. This must be done in an innovative way
just like everything is expected to function. New strategies
of management include many ways benchmarks should be
handled and how goals are to be set in order to create
tangible strategies to project, plan and achieve goals in the
short and long term.
Globalization
The world is now a smaller place that it has ever been.
Leaders need to be able to operate outside of their home
market and to have a very ample knowledge of how the
company impacts different cultures and how it faces
different challenges depending on the location in which it
operates. Products and services must adhere to the
challenges, and therefore leaders have to be aware of
these needs in order to properly respond to them.
Companies are now more than ever thinking about ways to
enhance their employee exchange programs and setting
up overseas headquarters in order to further expand the
business and have a wider reach worldwide.
Employee development
While organizations normally invest time and resources in
offering developmental courses to their workforce, they
usually do it in a very general way instead of focusing on
individuals and their specific needs. It is important to
consider the need for development opportunities that are
directed towards the needs of individuals, or better yet,
allow employees to have a personal involvement and
increased responsibility when it comes to their own
professional development. These type of approach requires
for leaders to understand closely the skills, strengths, and
weaknesses of team members so they can identify their
training needs and how meeting those necessities will
further benefit the company and the individuals
themselves.
