Meaning of Learning
 What is learning ? In simple words ,
learning is a change in behavior as a results
of experience.
“The process of having one’s behavior
modified, more or less permanently, by
what he does and the consequences of his
action , or by what be observes”.
The above definitions of learning reveal
several components that deserve
clarification.
First , learning involves change , be it good
or bad
Second , the change in behavior must be
relatively permanent. For that matter a
temporary adaptations are not considered
learning .
Third , only change in behavior acquired
through experience is considered learning.
Fourth , some form of experience is
necessary for learning. Experience may be
acquired directly through practice or
observation indirectly , as through reading.
Finally, learning is not confined to our
schooling only. As a matter of fact,
learning is a life – long process.
The knowledge acquire , the language we
speak , the habits , attitudes and skills
development in us are all due to learning.
Psychologists define learning as a relatively
permanent change in behavior , which
occuss as a result of activity, training ,
practice or experience.
Characteristics of Learning
 Learning is universal . All living begins
learn
 Learning is continuous, it is a perpetual
activity that takes place from ‘Womb to
Tomb’
 Learning is purposive. A child’s learning in
and out of school is closely linked up with
goals, purposes and satisfactions . Nobody
learns anything with out purpose.
 Learning is multiple and integrative.
for purpose of research
 Learning is contingent upon
experience learning is not something
to be given, it is to be gained by self -
experience
