Encourage children to think
about how food helps them
by asking the following
questions:
1. Have you ever seen a
picture of yourself when you
were a baby?
1. How have you changed
since you were a baby?
Children may give several
answers. Emphasize that
one important change is
that they have grown
taller and larger as they
have gotten older.
2. Explain that nutrients
from food help them grow
taller and gain weight. If
necessary, point out that
nourishing parts of food
such as vitamins and
minerals are called
nutrients.
ACTIVITY OF FOOD PYRAMID:
1. A good way to review this
subject is to watch The Food
Pyramid.
2. Ask students to talk about their
favourite foods. In which
categories do these foods belong?
What kinds of nutrients do they
provide?
3. Demonstrate how to
chart each meal. (For example, if
a student ate cereal for breakfast,
write the header "Breakfast" on
the board; below it write "cereal,"
"milk," and anything they might
put in the cereal, such as a
banana.) Talk about serving sizes:
If a student ate bread, how much
did they eat? Give students some
Prepare it for breakfast, lunch
and dinner to check whether
you are taking balance diet or
not. It will be your whole
family.
FOOD JOURNAL
As a homework assignment,
ask students to chart the
foods they eat during one
day, starting with the foods
they have eaten on the day of
the lesson. Ask students for
examples of a typical
breakfast, lunch, snack, and
dinner.
3. Ask children to bend one
arm up and feel their
biceps muscle, and then
feel the bones in their
wrists and lower arms.
Explain that nutrients
from food help their
bones and muscles grow
and stay strong.
4. Ask children jump up and
down. Explain that
nutrients from food give
them energy to work and
play.
5. Have you ever been sick
and had to stay home in
bed? Explain that most
people get sick
sometimes, but nutrients
in food help them stay
well and get well quickly
when they do get sick.
6. Then ask children to give
big smiles. Explain that
nutrients from food help
them have healthy teeth
as well as healthy skin and
hair.
time in class to chart the foods
they have already eaten that day.
Then group students into pairs
and have them discuss what they
ate and how it compares the food
pyramid. Ask volunteers to what
they've learned. How well did
they meet the requirements of
the food pyramid? How much
food did they eat from the group
at the top of pyramid? What can
they do to make sure they eat
more healthfully?
6. Have the pairs work together to
create a healthful menu for one
day that meets the guidelines in
the food pyramid. They can
include foods they eat as well as
some foods they think would be
healthful or fun to eat. Allow
groups time to share their menu
ideas.
After doing it, answer these
questions:
1. Describe your plate,
using the picture as a
guide?
2. Is your typical meal
healthy?
3. What food is in
excess?
4. What food is lacking?
5. Do you think that you
can continue eating
the same number of
meals?
6. What change/s would
you wish to make?
7. How often do you eat
sweets, chocolates or
food high in sugars?
How much plain water you
intake?
