Cloud Computing – NIST* Definition Cloud computing is a model for enabling convenient,  on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction.  but ….. this is a technology centric definition   (*National Institute of Standards and Technology)
What Cloud attributes are most important? Cloud Provider Virtualised resources  – physical resources are delivered through virtualisation in order to drive high utilisation and abstract technical complexity. Highly automated  – services are delivered with little or no human intervention through high degrees of process and task automation. Simplified and standardised  – the number of offerings and configurations kept small to drive economies of scale and reduce costs.  Ad-hoc configurations are discouraged (or even cost penalised). Elastically scalable (up/down)  – services delivered can be increased quickly or reduced quickly to meet planned demand changes. Near zero incremental costs  – additional resources can be added to the Cloud with a proportional small increase in overall cost. Cloud Consumer Easy to consume  – consumers can log on to a web based portal to select offerings from a catalog that hide the complexity of the technology. Pay per use  – consumption of the service is tracked, monitored, visible, and turned into a cost value driving consumption behaviour. Standardised offerings  – offerings in the catalog deliver common machine and software stack configurations supporting minimal customisation but ease of consumption. Rapidly delivered  – services are delivered within minutes and users notified when available and ready to consume.

Lockheed Martin SOA Competency Center Cloud Business Description Lockheed-Martin is global information technology and defense firm principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems for Defense, Civilian and Intelligence customers. Client Objectives Agility to meet new customer requirements, Faster time to market with R&D innovations, Competitive advantage through emerging technology insertion Business Problem Lockheed-Martin  required an approach to rapidly enable it's Research & Development teams with access new technologies, tools, techniques and existing corporate IP involved in the innovation of new space and ground systems.  Solution Approach Lockheed-Martin established a private cloud infrastructure, suitable for development, experimentation, and testing of command and control (C2), advanced intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), secure cyber, and logistics solutions. Dubbed the SOA Competency Center, it leverages deep-client domain knowledge and technology expertise, applying them in a consistent SOA engineering approach all delivered from the Cloud. Lockheed-Martin uses IBM's Service Delivery Manager (ISDM) to provide on-demand access to Corporate IP and development environments via a self-service Private Cloud. This has made the Competency Center more agile; reducing provisioning time from 4 days to hours and sometimes minutes, more dependable; minimizing environment installation errors through automation, and better governed; tracking demand by line of business using ISDM's built-in consumption-based accounting metrics collection

So training services seem to be a good area to start with. Complex trainings content can be offered at any time - anywhere at any place to anyone! Cloud Computing – NIST* Definition Cloud computing is a model for enabling convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction. but ….. this is a technology centric definition (*National Institute of Standards and Technology)
  • 3. What Cloud attributes are most important? Cloud Provider Virtualised resources – physical resources are delivered through virtualisation in order to drive high utilisation and abstract technical complexity. Highly automated – services are delivered with little or no human intervention through high degrees of process and task automation. Simplified and standardised – the number of offerings and configurations kept small to drive economies of scale and reduce costs. Ad-hoc configurations are discouraged (or even cost penalised). Elastically scalable (up/down) – services delivered can be increased quickly or reduced quickly to meet planned demand changes. Near zero incremental costs – additional resources can be added to the Cloud with a proportional small increase in overall cost. Cloud Consumer Easy to consume – consumers can log on to a web based portal to select offerings from a catalog that hide the complexity of the technology. Pay per use – consumption of the service is tracked, monitored, visible, and turned into a cost value driving consumption behaviour. Standardised offerings – offerings in the catalog deliver common machine and software stack configurations supporting minimal customisation but ease of consumption. Rapidly delivered – services are delivered within minutes and users notified when available and ready to consume.

Lockheed Martin SOA Competency Center Cloud Business Description Lockheed-Martin is global information technology and defense firm principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems for Defense, Civilian and Intelligence customers. Client Objectives Agility to meet new customer requirements, Faster time to market with R&D innovations, Competitive advantage through emerging technology insertion Business Problem Lockheed-Martin required an approach to rapidly enable it's Research & Development teams with access new technologies, tools, techniques and existing corporate IP involved in the innovation of new space and ground systems. Solution Approach Lockheed-Martin established a private cloud infrastructure, suitable for development, experimentation, and testing of command and control (C2), advanced intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), secure cyber, and logistics solutions. Dubbed the SOA Competency Center, it leverages deep-client domain knowledge and technology expertise, applying them in a consistent SOA engineering approach all delivered from the Cloud. Lockheed-Martin uses IBM's Service Delivery Manager (ISDM) to provide on-demand access to Corporate IP and development environments via a self-service Private Cloud. This has made the Competency Center more agile; reducing provisioning time from 4 days to hours and sometimes minutes, more dependable; minimizing environment installation errors through automation, and better governed; tracking demand by line of business using ISDM's built-in consumption-based accounting metrics collection

So training services seem to be a good area to start with. Complex trainings content can be offered at any time - anywhere at any place to anyone! The IT infrastructure management is decoupled from training planning and delivery and automated thru the life cycle.
