• “Distributed computing on internet Or delivery of
computing service over the internet.”
E.g.: Live, Gmail, VMs ,Amazon=-
Instead of running an e-mail program on your computer,
you log in to a Web e-mail account remotely. The software and storage for
your account doesn't exist on your computer -- it's on the service's
computer cloud.

History
One of the first movers in cloud computing was Salesforce.com,
which in 1999 introduced the concept of delivering enterprise
applications via a simple website.
In 2002 Amazon started Amazon Web Services, providing
services like storage, computation.
The year 2006 also saw the introduction of Amazon’s Elastic Compute cloud (EC2) as a commercial
web service that allowed small companies and individuals to rent computers on which to run their
own computer applications.

the arrival of browser based cloud enterprise applications, with the best known
being Google Apps Working on Google Chrome.

Cloud Computing services
Software as a Service (SaaS)
A cloud computing offering that provides users with access to a vendor’s cloud-based
software. Users do not install applications on their local devices. Instead, the
applications reside on a remote cloud network accessed through the web or an API.
Through the application, users can store and analyze data and collaborate on projects.
17
Key Features
o SaaS vendors provide users with software and applications on a subscription model.
o Users do not have to manage, install, or upgrade software; SaaS providers manage this.
o Data is secure in the cloud; equipment failure does not result in loss of data.
o Use of resources can be scaled depending on service needs.

Platform as a Service (PaaS)
A cloud computing offering that provides users a cloud environment in which they can
develop, manage, and deliver applications. In addition to storage and other computing
resources, users are able to use a suite of prebuilt tools to develop, customize and test
their own applications.
Key Features
o PaaS provides a platform with tools to test, develop, and host applications
o in the same environment.
o Enables organizations to focus on development without having to worry
o about underlying infrastructure.
o Providers manage security, operating systems, server software, and
o backups.
o Facilitates collaborative work even if teams work remotely.

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)
a cloud computing offering in which a vendor provides users access to computing
resources such as servers, storage, and networking. Organizations use their own
platforms and applications within a service provider’s infrastructure.
Key Features
o Instead of purchasing hardware outright, users pay for IaaS on demand.
o Infrastructure is scalable depending on processing and storage needs.
o Saves enterprises the costs of buying and maintaining their own hardware.
o Because data is on the cloud, there is no single point of failure.

If cloud computing is so great, why isn’t everyone doing it?
o The cloud acts as a big black box, nothing inside the cloud is visible to the clients.
o Clients have no idea or control over what happens inside a cloud.
o Even if the cloud provider is honest, it can have malicious system admins who
can tamper with the VMs and violate confidentiality and integrity.
o Clouds are still subject to traditional data confidentiality, integrity, availability,
and privacy issues, plus some additional attacks.
