 Cloud computing is the practice of using a network
of remote servers hosted on the internet to
store, manage, and process data rather than a
personal computer or local server. It is the new
revolution in information and communication
technology. It's something we are already familiar
with: emails and social networks are all services
provided using the cloud.
But the new idea associated with cloud computing
is to bring the same concept to business, and shift
data and basic applications to the cloud. This
could generate huge savings and more efficiency in
large areas of the public and private
sector, especially in services and manufacturing.
“cloud computing is a model for enabling
ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network
access to a shared pool of configurable
computing resources (e.g.
networks, servers, storage applications, and
services) that can be rapidly provisioned and
released with minimal management effort or
service provider interaction” (Mell and
Grance, 2011).
Cloud computing and SME
 This refers to offering virtualised resources
(computing/storage) on demand and is
considered as the most basic type of cloud
computing service model. In this model, it is
the cloud user who is responsible for
patching and maintaining the operating
systems and application software. According
to Lin et al., the target groups for IaaS are
mainly the infrastructure providers and the
system‟s administrators (Lin et al., 2009).
 User :IT Proffessional
 In IaaS, there exists a cloud computing service
type in that the cloud provider offers a
computing platform that normally includes
operating system or software development kit.
This option is referred to as PaaS and is
particularly interesting for developers (Lin et
al., 2009).As one of the best examples of the
PaaS services, mention can be made to Google
App Engine which offers a scalable environment
for developing and hosting web applications that
are normally developed using specific
programming languages.
 User : Developer
In this model, application software is installed by
the cloud providers and users are given the
access to the application software using their
cloud client software. Therefore, the cloud users
may not need to be concerned about the
infrastructure or the platform on top of which
their application is running (Creeger 2009;
Durkee 2010; Mell and Grance 2009b). According
to Lin et al., IT users are the main target of this
type of cloud service (Lin et al., 2009).

Cloud computing and SME
 Small and Medium Enterprise (SME), also
known as Small and Medium Business
(SMB), is a term used to describe companies
with the number of employees below a
certain threshold. While the term „SME‟ is
more common within the European Union
and is used by major international
organizations, such as, the United Nations
(UN) and the World Bank, SMB is more
frequently used in United States (Georgios et
al., 2001).
 Cloud computing offers a new pathway to
business agility and supports a faster time to
market by offering ready to consume cloud
enabled resources such as IT infrastructure
as a service, software platforms, and
business applications. These service can all
be accessed on demand and provide support
to new business requirement far faster than
acquiring, installing, configuring and
operation IT resources in house. Clearly this
is an attractive proposition to the
organisations. To survive, SMEs need to
decrease time to market .
 Therefore if the cloud is used appropriately
within an overall IT strategy, it can provide a
real competitive advantage, improve
business performance and control the cost of
IT resources required for scalable business
growth.
