The Cloud

            9
“The cloud has flattened IT
the way networks flattened the world.”

Cisco’s Vice President of Engineering Vivek Mansingh, 2012

                                                             10
“Gartner forecasts public cloud services to be
worth $109 billion this year, while the
EU expects the cloud to add as much as $206 billion
              to annual GDP between
                  now and 2020.”

                                                      11
“At year-end 2016,
more than 50 percent of Global 1000 companies
   will have stored customer-sensitive data
              in the public cloud.”.

              Gartner Prediction 2012

                                                12
“Public and private IT cloud services will generate
nearly 14 million jobs worldwide by 2015.”

                   IDC, March 2012

                                                      13
9 Trends that Impact the Future of
       Mobile Cloud Computing
Enterprise and consumer mobiles apps are getting
increasingly smart
Phone network providers are trying to climb up the
value chain.
4G LTE compatible devices are supporting bandwidth
intensive applications
The entry of iPads into the enterprise space
HTML5.

                                                     14
9 Trends that Impact the Future of
       Mobile Cloud Computing

The rise of mobile commerce
Fragility of mobile devices.
Increase in the worker mobility
Fragmentation of devices.

                                       15
Change

         16
Change! In Software Industry

It's not just a platform change.
      You can't charge the same
      amount.
      It's changing your world.

Source : 3 ways big software companies may fail in the cloud: 17
Software Applications Today

Support large number of users
Run on any devices
Location is no longer important
Require high scale servers / storages;
more complicate hardware
Need to develop high scale applications;
more complicate architectures
                                           18
Cloud Computing : SaaS
Gmail
Google Apps
Dropbox
Salesforce.com
Zoho
Microsoft Office 365
Etc.
                           19
SaaS Impacts!

Software business model with change from
licensing model to subscription (pay as you go)
Opportunity for SME : Cheaper software?
Software runs anywhere, anytime, any sdevice
Users can buy/ use software from anywhere
without knowing the origin as long as they
connected to the Internet
Less customer loyalty
                                                  20
Mail Servers / Solutions

                           21
IaaS Impacts!

IaaS is not just a normal hosting; it requires large
investment on a data center.
Different architecture and business model.
Fewer large cloud data center in ASEAN will
survive
Need to compete with big giants; Amazon,
Google, Oracle, etc.

                                                       22
PaaS Impacts!

Software development will shift toward the cloud.
Software company may develop their applications
on public IaaS/Paas; Microsoft Azure, Google App
Engines, Heroku, Amzaon S3
Require new skills
No boundary for selling softwares as long as your
infrastructure is ready.

business friendly:
 – Microsoft Azure + PHP + Java
 – Force.com + Heroku + Spring
 – Amazon Web Services – EC2, S3
 – Google App Engine
 – Exo IDE

                                                  28
Most Important Skills Needed for
                 Cloud Computing
       Business & Financial Skills
       Technical Skills
Enterprise Architecture & Business needs analysis
       Project management skills

Issues of Cloud Services
          in Thailand
Lack of awareness // Misunderstanding
about Cloud Computing
Security issue
Low Broadband/Internet Access
Data Protection
Limited Cloud Service Providers; both
SaaS (Application) and IaaS (Data Center)

                                            41
What are the Trust Issues?
Will my cloud provider be transparent about
      governance and operational issues?
      Will I be considered compliant?
Do I know where my data is?
Will a lack of standards drive unexpected
      obsolescence?
Is my provider really better at security than me?
Are the hackers waiting for me in the cloud?
      Will I get fired?

                                                                         42
Key Problems of Tomorrow
      Keeping pace with cloud changes
      Globally incompatible legislation and policy
      Non-standard Private & Public clouds
Lack of continuous Risk Management &
      Compliance monitoring
      Incomplete Identity Management implementations
      Haphazard response to security incidents

                                                                         43
Thailand Security Law
Thai Computer Crime Act came into force
on 18 July 2007
Offenses in the Act can be grouped into
two categories
 – offenses committed against computer
   systems or computer data
 – offenses committed via a computer

                                          44
Thai Computer Crime Act
the authorities have applied these
provisions to block thousands of websites
and to prosecute Internet users and ISPs.
October 2009, Thai stock prices plunged
for two successive days, following rumours
posted on the Internet > charged four
individuals

                                             45
Data Policy and Security
Government will be more concern on policy and
regulation on data security.
Discussing in terms of regulation/standards.
Established a new government agency
 – Electronic Transaction Development Agency
 – Thai CERT

                                                46
Cloud Opportunity in Thailand
Smartphone sold more than 1M units/qtr; Tablets
expect to be sold more than 2.5 M units in 2012
Large Enterprise start to invest in private cloud.
Public cloud services especially IaaS is in high
demand.
Data Centers in Thailand start to offer IaaS
ISVs explore SaaS

                                                     47
Opportunities for Software Industry

Less investment for startup
Physical location is not a constraint:
Cloud is borderless.
Faster time to market > Innovation
Wider distribution channel

                                         48
Time to Change!!
for The New Opportunities
