- 10. THE GEOLOGY Thegeology of the area of the middle valley consists of sedimentary rocks. The latest are at the mouth of the valley and they are layered and easily eroded rocks. In Stratified rocks, rich in fossils, were discovered many important fossils.

- 12. THE FOSSILS In1972 a fossil deposit of extraordinary importance was found in Cene, in a quarry, with many renown fish and reptiles fossils .

- 14. THE ENVIRONMENT inthe Seriana Valley
- 15. Environmental impact Atthe beginning of the XX century big factories started to develop along the valley, mainly cement factories and textile mills.
- 16. 60 years ago,there was an important industrial expansion in all of the villages near Bergamo. Until the beginning of the present crisis there were lots of well-functioning industries in the area. However, the industrial expansion severely our environment polluted. - 18. The river Seriois the most important river in the Seriana valley, which is named after it. It’s 120km long and originates in the Orobie mountains. Lots of factories are situated along its course and this is the main cause of the Serio’s water pollution. Water pollution in the Seriana Valley
- 19. Household and IndustrialWaste tip Until the mideighties almost of and all the household and industrial wastewater was directly thrown to the river through the sewer and rubbish dumps .
- 20. The consequences The toxic waters discharged into the river seriously polluted everything that lived inside it and near the riversides. Fortunately purification plants have been built to improve the situation, but they can’t totally resolve the problem. Banks and bed of the river at the beginning of the 80s.
- 21. Intervention of reclamation!Most factories had no water purification plants and discharged their own polluted water in to the river. Since 1985 municipalities have started to control waste water disposal. In 8 years the situation changed completely. Purification tank in a factory.

- 23. The Bicycle pathof the Seriana Valley! It is from Villa di Serio to Clusone. It’s 31 km long.

- 25. Mountain Pora MountainPora is situated between the Seriana Valley and the Camonica Valley. This mountain is in the province of Bergamo, exactly in the Borlezza Valley. It is the border between Brescia and Bergamo. There are 8 skiing facilities and in winter a lot of people go skiing and snowboarding! Mountain Pora is a tourist attraction also in summer because a lot of people go sunbathing and tracking in its natural landscape.

- 27. Life style inthe XIX century The life conditions were very hard in the XIX century, especially for women who had to look after their families, grow the crops and work in the factories. To make ends meet all the members of the family had to use as little food and clothes as possible. The children had to pick up chestnuts, grow silk bugs and look after the cattle. Children mortality was very high because of lack of hygene, many people died of pellagra, a desease caused by lack of vitamines. Emigration was the only possible solution. 3-4 thousand people emigrated to Swizzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, the USA,Canada, Australia and Argerntina from Albino. Religion was the only relief. The many churches and shrines in the valley witness the fath of the people in the Virgin Mary.
- 28. Water for industriesThe water that came from the mountains, allowed to build the first factories. In 1196 the first wool mill was built, and this triggered the trade of wollen clothes. By the XVII century these small factories had disappeared and new cotton mills were built in the villages near Alzano. Also important was the working of iron, silk and coti stones.
- 29. The coti stonesA peculiar activity of the villages of Nembro and Pradalunga was the mining and working of Coti stones, special stones used to sharpen working tools. A really ancient activity employing about 1000 people in the ‘800s. Children and women worked out the final product, while men did the mining. Place where they worked Coti stones
- 30. MILLS AND FACTORIESMills and factories were built along rivers and canals because they needed the mechanical power supplied by the flowing of the water to work.

The most importantIndustries in the Valley -Honegger cotton mill: it was built from 1878 to 1890 and it’s still active. -Albini cotton mill: it was founded in 1876 but a the moment there is only part of the original building. -Italcementi cement factory: it was founded by Giacinto Guffanti in 1886 and supplies the most important construction sites. -Angelo Zambaiti was one of the first and more important textile industries in the Seriana Valley. He was born in 1907, near Albino.
- 32. A great Albinesepainter In 1553 GIOVAN BATTISTA MORONI was born in Albino. He was an important painter whose portraits are famous all over the world. His famous paintings include “Il Sarto” that is situated in London, “Il Cristo Crocefisso” and “Il Vedovo”.
