DEFINITION OF COMFORT
• A state of mind in which an individual is at peace
with himself and his environment.
• It is a state of ease or well being.
DEFINITION OF COMFORT DEVICES
• These are mechanical devices planned to
provide optimal comfort to an individual
• These are the articles which would aid to
the comfort of the patient when used, by
relieving discomfort and helping to
maintain correct posture
FACTORS INFLUENCING COMFORT
• Pain
• Restriction of movement due to weakness or
appliances
• Wrinkled, soiled and wet sheets
• Delayed or inadequate attention to meet the
personal needs such as cleanliness, elimination,
nourishment, etc.,
• Lack of exercise
• Temperature extremes
• Too bright lights and glares

PILLOWS
Pillows are used to give comfortable position to the
patient.
Purposes:
 Used for support to maintain correct body
alignment
 Used under head, arms, legs & along spine or
abdomen to provide comfort.
 Helps to reduce pressure
BACK REST
It is a mechanical device which provides a suitable
support and rest for the back of patient in sitting
position
Purposes:
 To relieve dyspnea.
 To provide a comfortable change of position.
 To reduce workload on heart in cardiac patients
BED CRADLE
It is a semicircular / rectangular frame of metal or
wood or bamboo used to hold the bed linen from
touching the pt.
Purposes:
 To prevent pressure from the weight of linen.
 To allow air to circulate around lower limbs in
case of burns, open skin sores.
 Electronic bed cradles are used to supply the
desired warmth in case of shock
CARDIAC TABLE
It is a device designed as an over-bed table and is
placed in front of the patients while they are in
fowler’s position.
Purposes:
 Patient can rest over the table with the help of
pillow.
 Helps to take meals & used for writing.
MATTRESSES
These are special type of mattresses filled with water or
air which moves from one part of the mattress to the
other to reduce the pressure in the same area.
Purposes:
 To prevent pressure sores
 Used for bed ridden patients
 Used for burns, thin and obese patients
TRAPEZE BAR
Bar is suspended from an overhead frame to head
of bed
Purposes:
 Patient can grasp the bar to raise the trunk off
the bed surface or to move up in bed.
FOOTBOARD
Device that is placed towards the foot of patients bed to
serve as support for his feet which is usually made up of
wood / plastic / heavy canvas
Purposes:
 To support patients feet
 To prevent foot drop.
TROCHANTER ROLLS
• It can be made by rolling a bath blanket or bath
towel.
• It should be placed from the patient’s iliac crest
to mid thigh.
Purposes:
• To maintain body alignment
• To prevent external rotation of legs when patient
is in supine position .
SANDBAGS
They are sand filled plastic bags available in
various sizes.
Purposes:
 Provides comfort.
 Immobilize extremities & maintain specific body
alignment in fractures.
 Prevent foot drop.
SIDE RAILS
Side rails are the metal bars positioned along the
sides of the length of the bed
Purposes:
 Ensure patient’s safety & are useful for
increasing mobility
 Provide assistance in rolling from side to side or
sitting up in bed
WEDGE/ABDUCTOR PILLOW
It is a triangular shaped pillow made of heavy foam
Purposes:
 Used to maintain legs in abduction following
Total Hip Replacement Surgery
KNEE REST
This is a device placed under the knees to provide
comfort.
Purposes:
 Gives relaxation and relieves pain on tendons
beneath the knees.
BED BLOCKS
Made up of wood or metal used to raise the foot end or
head end of the bed.
Purposes:
 To prevent shock
 To arrest haemorrhage
 To retain enema
 To provide traction
AIR CUSHION
Air cushions are made up of rubber and inflated
with air. They should not be placed directly in
contact with skin.
Purposes:
• Prevents bed sores and provides relaxation.
• Relieves pressure on certain parts of the body
such as coccyx and sacrum.
RINGS
These are circular rings made of rubber or cotton.
Purposes:
 Relieve pressure on certain parts of the body
like elbow and heels
HAND ROLLS
These are made up of cloth that rolled into a
cylinder about 4-5 inches long and 2-3 inches in
diameter & secured with tape.
Purposes:
 Maintain thumb in slightly adducted & in
opposition to fingers.
 Maintain fingers in slightly flexed position.
CONTENT SUMMARY
Comfort is a state of physical ease and freedom
from pain or constraint. There are various factors
which can influence the level of comfort in a
patient such as Pain, Restriction of movement,
etc., In order to meet the basic need of comfort
in patients, there are numerous comfort devices
are available like Pillows, Back rest, Bed
cradles, etc.
