This document discusses routed optical networking as an approach to maximizing infrastructure investments. It outlines issues with the legacy approach of separate optical and router networks and notes that optics costs are increasing as speeds increase. Routed optical networking integrates routers and optics to reduce power, space, and total cost of ownership compared to traditional networks. It provides examples of 400G pluggable coherent optics and new silicon requirements. Benefits shown include up to 74% less power and 58% less space per node, as well as 46-57% lower total and operating costs. The approach has been deployed in Australia and Europe by multiple service providers.
