Brief 1: Television
A LEVEL MEDIA STUDIES NON EXAMINED ASSESSMENT (NEA)
FOR SUBMISSION IN 2022
 A cross-media production for a new television programme in a factual or
fictional genre (or subgenre/hybrid) of your choice.
 Create an audio-visual sequence from a new television programme and
associated print or online materials to promote the same programme.
 You should create a cross-media production for a programme to be broadcast on
a Public Service channel, either E4 or BBC3, targeting a specialised audience of
16-25 year olds with a particular interest in your chosen genre.
Details of Brief
TV Brief: Task 1- Audio Visual
 Create the opening sequence, including titles, for Episode 1 of your new
television programme.
 Length: 2 minutes 30 seconds – 3 minutes.

Minimum Requirements
The sequence must construct representations of at least one social group and include the following:
 An opening sequence that establishes key information about the narrative/topic, the locations,
and the characters/participants in the new programme
 Titles, including the name of the programme and title of the first episode, to establish the
narrative/topic and genre
 Two or more filming locations appropriate to your chosen genre
 At least three different characters or participants
 Construction of narrative exposition and/or enigma, appropriate to the sequence
 Wide range of camera shots, angles, and movement, appropriate to the chosen genre
 Diegetic sound (including dialogue) and non-diegetic sound (such as a soundtrack or sound
effects)
 Editing of footage and sound, including continuity editing in the opening sequence
TV Brief: Task 2- Option a) Online
 Create a new functioning website to promote your television programme to its target audience.
This must include a working homepage plus one linked page,
either:
 A ‘Profiles’ page
or:
 An ‘About the Series’ page
 Length: 2 pages, including 30-45 seconds of embedded audio or audiovisual material related to
the topic.
*Online options:
 Candidates are not required to create websites through programming languages such as HTML. It
is acceptable for candidates to use web design software or templates in the
 online options. However, candidates must be responsible for the design of the website and all
content (such as written text/language, images, audiovisual material) must be original.

Minimum requirements
Your online production must construct representations of at least one social group and include a minimum of 5 original images and audio or audio-visual
material as detailed below.
Homepage:
 Original title for the programme and a brief ‘blurb’ to promote the series
 Menu bar including links to other pages and social media sites. Only ONE of these should be a working link as detailed below
 Scheduling details: date and time of release/broadcast
 Original images that establish the location, narrative/topic and/or characters in the programme
 Working link to one page from the website, either:
 a ‘Profiles’ page: introducing three key characters or participants and explaining their role in the series, accompanied by appropriate images
Or:
 • an ‘About the Series’ page: outlining the key themes/issues in the series and explaining where and how it was filmed, accompanied by appropriate images
These pages must include:
 • Written text that introduces the characters and narrative/topic of the programme (approximately 200 words in total)
 • 30-45 seconds of original ‘on location with…’ or ‘meet the cast’ audio or audio-visual material embedded into one of the pages, including an interview
 with a member of the cast (e.g. an actor or presenter) or production team (e.g. the director or writer)
 • Audio-visual material must include dialogue or narration; it must not just be a sequence of footage set to music

Create a front and back cover for the
 DVD or Blu-ray box set and a poster to promote the release of your television
programme.
 Length: 3 pages (note – the front and back cover count as one page each.)

 a minimum of 6 original images as detailed below
 at least two different locations for photography
 at least three different characters

Spine: Title, production company logo, age rating
DVD/Blu-ray back cover:
 At least one main image (original and different from the images
on the front cover and poster)
 3 ‘thumbnail’ images depicting different scenes from the
programme
 Promotional ‘blurb’ for the TV programme (approx 150 words),
including reference to narrative disruption and/or equilibrium
 Billing block
 Company/broadcaster logo, age rating and tech info
Poster:
 Original title for the television programme
 One main image (original and different from the images
on the DVD/Blu-ray cover)
 An element of narrative, for example enigma or character
