MEANING OF COMPUTER
 The word “Computer” is a Latin word. It means “to reckon” or
“to compute”. It takes input in the form of numbers, letters,
sounds, pictures, etc.
 COMPUTER can be expanded into Commonly Operated
Machine Particularly Used for Trade, Education, and Research.
 Computer is an electronic data processing machine. It is
designed automatically to accept the input data, store data and
the produce data and output result. I worked under the direction
of details stored of instruction.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HARDWARE AND
SOFTWARE
OPERATING SYSTEM
 An operating system (OS) is the program that, after being
initially loaded into the computer by a boot program, manages
all of the other application programs in a computer. The
application programs make use of the operating system by
making requests for services through a defined application
program interface (API). In addition, users can interact directly
with the operating system through a user interface, such as a
command-line interface (CLI) or a graphical UI (GUI).
FUNCTIONS OF OPRATING SYSTEM
 Controls the computer resources
 Executes the application programs
 Informs user about wrong input or system fault
 Acts as an interface between the hardware and the applications software.
 Maintains priority among users
 Provides multiaccess facility
 Provides security
 Manages processor
 Manages memory
 Shares resources
CLASSIFICATION OF OS
INTRODUCTION TO WINDOWS2007
 Windows7 is an operating system. It’s a Microsoft product and
is popular among PC users. Microsoft windows is a Graphical
User Interface (GUI). Which allows as to pass instructions to
the computer.
LOGGING ON
Windows is a multi user Operating System
(OS). An administrator can be provided with
different log on and password and other users
with different log on. So while closing the
windows, the users have to log off from their
respective log on.

DESKTOP AND TASKBAR
 Desktop is a work area on the screen, on which we see various icons
and the application windows, which are in run state. Example: My
Computer, My Document, Recycle Bin,..
 We can use the desktop for almost any task such as opening files,
connecting the internet, coping the files, reading our mail and so on.
 Taskbar is usually a narrow gray strip present at the bottom of the
screen. On the left it has Menu appears on the screen.
ICONS ON DESKTOP
 Desktop has several icons. Icons are small pictures/images
representing applications. Each icons has a label telling us the name of
the application it represents Eg. (My Computer, etc.). We can place so
many icons on desktop. Icons can be classified as
 Application icon
An application icon represents an application that is running. It is
displayed in the taskbar.
 Group icon
Group icon represents a window that is opened.
 Program-item icon
It represents the application one can start from windows.

WINDOWS EXPLORER
 Windows Explorer is a program that helps us to manage files and
folders. It is a powerful tool that helps to organize files and
directories. It is used to view all the files and directories.
 It is a file-folder manipulating program. The following steps are
followed to execute it.
 Click “start”.
 Choose “ Windows explorer”.
FIND OPTIONS
 To search a particular folder, subfolders or files in the disk of a
computer, find options is used. To find and folders based on three
criteria:
 Name & Location
 Date
 Advanced

SHORTCUT
Right clicking the item and giving shortcut option can
create shortcuts for any application, folder or file.
Shortcuts can be created in desktop or within the folder
or subfolder.
BRIEFCASE
 It is a folder containing files and folders that can move between
desktop computer.
 We can synchronize files on connected computers.
RUNNING APPLICATION
 T o start a program by using the Run command
 Click start, and then click Run
 In the Open box, enter the location and name of the program we
want to start.

CUSTOMIZATION
 We can change the appearance of windows 07 to suit our needs and
preferences.
 To change the desktop theme
 Open Desktop Themes properties in Control Panel.
 Click the theme we went in the Theme list
 Under Settings, clear check boxes for any windows items we don’t
want the theme to be applied.
