MOUSE
Computer Applications
WHAT IS MOUSE ?
• A mouse is an external computer hardware device.
• It allows a user to control the motion of a computer cursor.
• It also select objects on the screen by moving and clicking
the device.
• During the 1980’s, computer mice became the dominant
way for people to interface with personal computers after
testing with various devices showed it to be the most
convenient and simple to use.
• The mouse works on the basic principle that the movement
of the device is
translated into the movement of the cursor on the screen.
What is computer mouse?
A computer mouse is a handheld
hardware input device that controls
a cursor in a GUI (graphical user interface)
and can move and select text, icons, files,
and folders on your computer.
INVENTION OF MOUSE
The first computer mouse was publicly unveiled in 1968 by
its inventor, Douglas C.Engelbart.It was made of wood.
Mouse Physical Description
• Computer mice come in many shapes and sizes but
are all designed to fit either
the left or right hand.
• The standard mouse has two buttons toward the
front (to left-click and right-click) and a scroll wheel
in the center (to quickly move the screen up and
down).
HOW THE MOUSE COMES ITS
NAME ?
It just looked like a mouse with a tail, and we all called it that.”
Mouse vs mice or mouses
When talking about one (singular) we refer to a
computer mouse as a "mouse." When talking about
two or more (plural), we refer to them as "mice" or
"mouses" although "mice" is more standard.
MOUSE MICE
TYPES OF MOUSE
OPTICAL MOUSE
• An optical mouse is an computer pointing device that uses a
light-emitting diode
an optical sensor, and digital signal processing ( DSP ).
• This mouse doesn’t have mouse ball and electromechanical
transducer.
• Movement is detected by sensing changes in reflected light,
instead of interpreting the motion of a rolling sphere.
WIRELESS MOUSE
• The Mouse without wire or cord is called wireless mouse
or cordless mouse.
• Most wireless mice use radiofrequency (RF) technology
to communicate
information to your computer.
GSTICK MOUSE
• Gordon Stewart designed the Stick to add a more authentic and
natural feel to
artistic manipulations on both Macs and PCs.
• These mice are Wireless and pocket-sized. It looks like a pencil.
• GStick mouse is like a pencil.
• It can be used for web browsing, office work or whatever you
do with your traditional mouse, with more comfort.
TRACKBALL MOUSE
• A trackball mouse is a pointing device.
• It consists of a ball held by a socket containing
sensors to detect a rotation of the ball. The user
rolls the ball with the thumb, fingers, or the palm of
the hand to move a pointer.
MECHANICAL MOUSE OR BALL
MOUSE
• A mechanical mouse is a computer hardware input device
comprised of a metal or
rubber ball in its underside.
• Moving the mouse causes the ball to roll, and sensors inside
the mouse detect the movement of the ball and
consequently send signals to the cursor on the screen.
FUNCTION OF MOUSE
• Move the mouse cursor - The primary function is
to movethe mouse cursor on the screen.
• Open or execute a program- Once you've moved
the cursor to an icon, folder, or other object clicking
or double clicking that object opens the document
or executes the program.
• Drag and drop -Once something is selected it
can also be moved using the drag and drop
method.
• Scroll - When working with a long document or
viewing a long webpage you may need to scroll up
or down which can be done using the mouse wheel
or clicking and dragging the scroll bar.
What does a laptop use for a
mouse?
• Because a laptop is designed for portability almost all laptops today use
a touchpad as the mouse, and some lenovo laptops still use a trackpoint.
What does a smart phone or tablet
use for a mouse ?
• Smart phones and tablets use a touch screen as
their primary input device, and therefore your
finger is the mouse on these devices. With most
tablets, you also have the option to connect a
computer mouse and use it on the tablet.
HOW HAS THE DESIGN CHANGED?
• The computer mouse has definitely changed size,
getting smaller and smaller.
• The design has also become more comfortable to
hold, as the first computer mouse
was quite square.
• Motion detectors have changed from a tracking ball,
to an LED light, and now a laser. This improves the
quality of motion we see on the screen, and also
eliminated the use of the mouse pads.
• A ‘scroll wheel’ is also available on most mouses,
making it easier to view web pages and folders.
