Computerised library services
Introduction
 A Digital Library is a special library with a focused
collection of digital objects that can include text,
visual material, audio material, video material, stored
as electronic media formats, along with means for
organizing, storing, and retrieving the files and media
contained in the library collection.
 The electronic content may be stored locally, or
accessed remotely via computer net works. An
electronic library is a type of information retrieval
system.
Library automation
 Started in India in 1980’s.
 CSIR(Council for scientific & industrial research) ,
DRTC (Documentation research & training centre) –
initiated process of library automation
Objective :
 For providing effective and improved services in libraries
and information centers, but the level of
improvement/progress is not upto the level, this may be
 Due to lack of knowledge in ICT (Information &
communication technology),
 Lack of budget,
 Lack of confidence.
Library automation
Library automation
 Library automation is a technological approach that helps
in disseminating information easily and reducing the
budget allocated for educational spending on libraries.
 Automation in libraries is an emerging trend and is getting
acceptance in the education sector. Automation allows
libraries to improve in cataloging and hence the quality of
materials available in the collection.
Library automation
 In today's world of information, one of the most
important aspect of development is to replace manual
systems with web-based online automated management.
 The majority of universities hesitate to upgrade their
library management systems as they need more time and
high initial investment to do so.
Library catalogue
 A library catalog or library catalogue is a register of
all bibliographic items found in a library or group
of libraries, such as a network of libraries at several
locations.
OPAC
 The library is a service oriented institution which facilitates the users
with its rich information resources through catalogue.
 With the advancement of information and communication
technology, applications of computer technology with dedicated
library software's has enabled the libraries to develop new service
known as Online Public Access Catalogue to the users.
 This reflects the library holding in machine-readable format
providing various searching access points like author, title, call
number, keywords etc.
