  Conception of curriculum Whencurriculum developers get together to design and construct curriculum they bring with them very different ways of thinking about curriculum matters and the curriculum development process. They have different points of view as to what curriculum is concerned with what should try to achieve ,let alone how one should be constructed. The fundamental base from which we think and act about curriculum may be referred to as conceptions of curriculum. Conceptions of curriculum can be divided into six perspectives.

  Academic Rationalist conception Academicrationalism, probably the oldest approach to conceptualizing curriculum, argues that the major function of the school curriculum is to enhance the individual’s intellectual abilities in those subject areas most worthy of study. Thus curriculam in schools should both assist students to learn how to learn within the subject as well as to provide appropriate learning material. This conception argues that schools, as special places for the development of our future society, should expose students to the accumulated wisdom acquired through a study of academic subjects.

  It is notonly to address the curriculum towards perceived (and changing) social needs (such as drug education, self-concept enhancement, etc.) but rather the curriculum should provide students with the intellectual tools and understandings to face adult life. Such concepts and techniques may be found in a detailed study of the subjects from the academic disciplines. The academic disciplines, such as history, chemistry, English, biology, geography, and so forth, are considered to be the depositories of our accumulated wisdom which we have systematically organized into fields of study and bodies of knowledge over the years.

  Academic Rationalist Conception Content Aschool curriculum that favor's the academic rationalist conception typically emphasis the knowledge, skills and values to be found in every academic discipline. It is argued that this conception includes more than just knowledge within content, but also the skills and the discipline.

  Humanistic Conception Focuses onthe individual and the individuals needs and interests. The humanistic or personal relevance conception supports the view that the school curriculum should provide learners with intrinsically rewarding experiences to enhance personal development . The humanistic curriculum experts suggests that if education succeeds in development of needs, interests, and aptitudes of every individual, the students will willingly and intelligently cooperate with on another for common benefits . To the humanists, the goals of education are related to the ideal of personal growth, integrity and autonomy .

  Social reconstruction conception Focuseson society needs. We should create an education where subject matter focuses on environmental, economic, social and political issues or perspectives happening in society (i.e. pollution). This conception sees the curriculum as a way to produce social change. In this perspective the needs and betterment of society are placed above those of the individual. This allows young learners to have a better understanding and connection with society where in the curriculum they are learning ways on how to live. Three strands of social reconstructionism may be determined from the literature, each representing a somewhat different purpose within the social reconstructionist conception:

  Social adaptation: Arelatively conservatively argued case for school curricula to be adapted to meet societal needs. Social reconstructionism: A radical, critical perspective that demands rapid curriculum change to meet society’s urgent, immediate needs. Futurist perspective: A speculative view of what school curricula might be like in order to meet perceived needs of society.
