Copulation and conception
Ovulation provides a female gamete
The ovum moves slowly along the oviduct by;
1) Peristalsis – rhythmic contraction of muscles in the oviduct
2) Cilia- hair on the lining of the oviduct sweep the ovum
It takes 4-7 days for the ovum to reach the uterus.
Copulation
Human copulation is the act of reproduction in which
the male sex organ enters the female sex organ.
• In human copulation, the
highly motile sperms get
deposited in the female
reproductive tract.
• If this process is successful,
the sperm will fertilize the
egg, thereby forming new
offspring. Copulation is also
known as sexual intercourse
or coitus.
Fertilisation is the fusion of ovum and sperm
Fertilisation: fusion of ovum and sperm.
Series of changes undergoes for fertilization;
1) The ovum membrane alters to form a barrier to the entry of other
sperm
2) The head of the sperm moves toward the nucleus of the ovum and
the two fuse
3) Zygote starts to divide
Conception (when the
egg is fertilized by the
sperm) can take place
as soon as
three minutes after
sex or it may take up
to five days.
Implantation (when the fertilized egg attaches to
the uterine wall) occurs five to 10 days after
fertilization—which means it can happen
anywhere from five to 15 days after you had sex.
