Our Objectives : To find unusual and different ways of getting round a problem To learn to use more of our brain To experiment with some structured thinking techniques To use some right brain thinking techniques
What is Creative Thinking ? Creative Thinking is a term used when we need to expand our ideas and to approach things from a different angle. It refers to a set of ideas that use the right brain as well as the left brain- to release the full capacity of our mind.
When to use Creative Thinking? When you want to try something new When you come up with new ideas for approaching old problems To boost ideas about a product When you have apparently reached a “dead end” When things seem to have got bogged down and you are going round in circles
When to avoid Creative Thinking? When gathering facts When you are at the implementation stage and things are going well When you are already over-burdened with ideas and need to rationalized them When preparing an argument
The MIND Your brain has two sides. The more we integrate those two sides, the more integrated we become as people. Your brain's right and left side have distinctly different ways of looking at the world. Your two hemispheres are as different from each other. The left brain controls the right side of the body and, in essence, is logical analytical, judgmental and verbal. The right brain controls the left side of the body and leans more to the creative, the intuitive.
The LEFT Hemisphere Logical Sequential Rational Analytical Objective Looks at parts
The RIGHT Hemisphere Random Intuitive Holistic Synthesizing Subjective Looks at Wholes
Patterns Words Imagination Sequence Pictures Mathematics Music Numbers Rhythm Logic Rhyme Language The Right Side Emphasizes The Left Side Emphasizes
The WHOLE BRAINER (Left & Right) Most individuals have a distinct preference for one of these styles of thinking. Some, however, are more whole-brained and equally adept at both modes.

10 Ways to Be Creative at Work 1. Adopt a Flexible Attitude About Work Stop thinking of your work only as a source of livelihood. You spend more than half of your waking hours in it – it better give you something more than just livelihood. Enjoy your work and start having fun in it. When you do, you begin to see it in a different light. Then you become more motivated to do a good job. As you resolve to do a better job, you tend to find more creative ways to get the job done. A flexible mind leads to a creative mind.
10 Ways to Be Creative at Work 2. Don’t Fall in Love With the Way You’re Doing Things There’s always a better way of doing things. This is difficult for some who have fallen in love with the way they’ve been doing the same things for the past several years. When people feel that they have experienced some success with their past and present ways, it will be very difficult for them to accept new ideas, much less come up with new ways of doing things. If you want to succeed, be open to new ways of doing things. Technology today has improved produces a hundred fold. There’s no harm in adopting new ways of getting things done. If you’re not improving your work or using technology in your work, somebody out there is.
10 Ways to Be Creative at Work 3. When Being Trained Ask Why When you are new on the job or there’s a new system or procedure being adopted, the natural tendency is to learn how. In fact, your trainers will teach you how. Take every opportunity to ask why, not just how. When you focus on the how, there’s a good chance that you will get stuck with that new procedure till kingdom come. There’s a possibility that it will become your new routine and you will lose the creativity to do things differently or more effectively. Knowing the why aside from the how will give you a more open mind.
10 Ways to Be Creative at Work 4. Find Opportunities to Express Your Ideas Ever wonder how many good ideas are killed every day? Perhaps millions! Many people have good ideas in their head but they never had any opportunity to let others know about these ideas. Here’s what happens when the manger or supervisor does not purposively extract good ideas from their employees: -employees just keep the ideas to themselves -employees simply forget about these ideas -employees give these ideas to those who are willing to listen -employees just cease to have new ideas If you want to make a difference, find the right opportunities to express your ideas. If your boss does not give you the opportunity, create one-such as during the open forum in staff meetings or when a subject related to your idea is being discussed. The more you express your ideas, the more creative your ideas become.
10 Ways to Be Creative at Work 5. Experiment If you have a good idea, experiment on it. That’s how great things start as ideas that were experimented on. When experimenting on a new idea, make sure that you will not disrupt the whole operation. If the experiment is going to cost your company, get permission and approval from the proper authorities. But if it is something that you can do in your own area of responsibility without costing or disrupting the organization, just do it! You’ll never know if your idea will work unless you see it work. So, experiment! Take risks – a mistake is just another way of doing things. Do not be afraid to commit mistakes as long as the mistakes you make are not crippling – both to the organization and to your career.
10 Ways to Be Creative at Work 6. Ask Around for Suggestions No one has the monopoly of knowledge. It pays to ask other people for suggestions on how to best to do a good job. The best people to ask are the customers or the users of our output, the boss who gives the directions, and the peers or teammates with whom we share responsibility for the job. But don’t just ask, listen. When the customers who pay for your products talk, you better listen, because the customer will continue to be the king for decades to come.
10 Ways to Be Creative at Work 7. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask It does not show that you do not know. It shows that you want to know. What you get from asking around helps build up your knowledge base and increases your chances of being able to use that knowledge more creatively.
10 Ways to Be Creative at Work 8. Use Your Imagination One of the worst things that can happen to your job is when you have completely reduced everything you do to a fixed routine. Routine engenders monotony and boredom sets in when all we do is routine. That signals that our job does not need humans but robots. Look at your job and find ways to minimize, if not totally abolish, the monotony of routine. Review the manner, the frequency, and the purpose for doing your job. It pays to always use your imagination in doing your work. It is what differentiates us from robots or from other humans.
10 Ways to Be Creative at Work 9. Make Several Options When implementing a new way of doing things, make several options. If you are going to do something important, don’t leave anything to chance. You must have a clear plan with several options that are available to you. This is a way to be creative and at the same time minimize your risks. When one option fails, switch to the others until you are able to perfect your new idea. Many great inventors did not succeed by trial and error but by having several options, one of which led them to resounding success. Don’t be boxed into one way. Get several options and you enhance your chances of success.
10 Ways to Be Creative at Work 10. Go for Little Victories First You don’t have to have a big bang right away. Many successful persons started with little victories that propelled and motivated them to succeed more as they went on. Once you succeed with a simple idea, you will get the feel of how it is to succeed. Then you enhance your drive to try other bigger ideas. That drive will spur your creativity as you develop a momentum and a mindset of creativity. Nothing succeeds like success, no matter how small this success may seem.
Make Your Routine Work Interesting A person who is unemployed or underemployed loses part of his dignity as a human person, with God given talents and capabilities. We need work to fulfill ourselves because no matter how routine work is, there’s a noble concept behind it.
Make Your Routine Work Interesting Work is a service not only to the company we work for . It is also a service we render to ourselves, to our families and to the community at large. When we look at our work as service, then we can joyfully embrace the interesting as well as the difficult moments.
Make Your Routine Work Interesting Do you realize that everything you see, touch or use is a product of someone else’s work or service and that the excellence of that service provides you joy and satisfaction? The level or nature of the work intrinsically does not matter. What matters is how work provides service. That is the value of work.
Make Your Routine Work Interesting Hard Work. It is important that each one of us play our roles the best way we can. Most employees slacken on the job because no one is watching or the job is not rewarding enough for them. These are not justifiable excuses. If we are to work for a bright future for our country, we should not resist hard work.
Make Your Routine Work Interesting Work as art. Artful work is the process of bringing all our energy together to a particular moment or task that results in artistry.
Make Your Routine Work Interesting Dedication. If we are to be artful, we should dedicate ourselves in such a way that we struggle through uncertainty, suffer pain, attempt to learn everything there is to know about our craft, and practice, practice, practice.
Make Your Routine Work Interesting But most importantly , you should try using this technique: say a brief prayer of offering to GOD. This way, you cannot help but do the work to the best of your ability.
