Matthew T. Johnston
Professional Profile
-I am a highly dedicated, student centered instructor who seeks to transform our sluggish
public schools by proving that high standards can and will be achieved given the proper
attitude and support.
- I always bring the social, racial, ethnic, gender, religious, class, regional, and
experiential identities of the students into the conversation of education as the only true
way to decode the past from all relevant points of view.
- I create a safe space for thinking, speaking, and growing in every way I can conceive of
every day. Every struggle or failure is an opportunity for my students and myself.
- Historical education is essentially a conversation with the past, with a prerequisite core
of historical knowledge and analytical skills. I facilitate the growth of those skills and
knowledge until my classroom becomes a launching pad for well informed analysis of
humanity past and present.
- I really like young people, and I envy their wide eyed joy as they encounter the world.
I am honored to be a part of their development!
