Pancha Kosas: 5 layers (sheaths) of existence
 1.ANNAMAYA – Physical 5

 3.MANOMAYA – Mental

 4.VIGNANAMAYA – Wisdom

 5. ANANDAMAYA – Bliss

•These are not water tight compartments but merge into one another.
What is stress?
“Non specific basic response pattern of the body which
prepares it to handle a demanding situation”

 Fashionable! ( all ages)

 Multi-dimensional (all body systems)

 Varies from person to person (situation vs. reaction)

 Speed of thoughts
Stress – Yogic Perspective
      Vignanmaya (Wisdom) kosa:
“Cannot eat cake as I have
                diabetes”

Conflicts in Manomaya (Mental) kosa:
due to going against what is right “ I want
cake, I love it, I cant do without it”

  Pranamaya (Vital) Kosa Imbalances:
            (symptomatic)
symptoms of uneven breathing, wrong flow
          of prana, no rhythm

         Annamaya (Physical) Kosa:
   (manifestation of imbalance as disease)
    Improper digestion, physical ailments on
                 weak organs
Stress -Medical Science perspective….
                                      Sympathetic Para
 Heart sympathetic

 Eye
   Pupils
   Eyelids
 Blood glucose
 Digestion

Imbalance in body systems
Brain cells damage
Excessive Cortisol secretion in brain leads to:
     Killing the brain cells,
     Reduction in new cell growth

Summary so far……
 Modern science/Medical science approach to human
body is largely limited to the physical body
 Yoga looks at body in 5 sheaths – different levels of
consciousness – physical being just one of them
 Impact of Stress is multi dimensional
 Most ailments originate in mental sheath and
percolate in body through vital sheath (prana)
 Yoga therapy has a multi dimentional approach to
  human body and related ailments
 Ways to cure most illness including stress lies not just
in physical body but working on subtle layers of self.

Editor's Notes

  • #5: Modern medicine has made our lives very very comfortable. Physical body problems can be totally solved – organs replaced, brain surgery, open heart surgery etc etc.Know brain – what about thoughts? Ideas? Dreams? – abstract concepts. We don’t understand those. Understanding limited to what we can see, hear.Brain is here, mind is elsewhere – can we explain this? Our expertise limited to whatever is in physical body – beyond that we are still not capable to understand / solvePsychosomatic problems are beyond scope of this scienceMedicines work only on physical body – give symptomatic relief.
  • #6: Yoga looks at body not just as physical body2 bodies have all phyical parts – one alive – one dead2 bodies alive – all same but different due to emotions, mind, feelingsIt is Riri with body + mind+ knowledge+ happinessOur purpose in life is ‘happiness/bliss’ and everything we do is ultimately to be happyYet happiness defeats us.
  • #7: Stress can be different for different people: child come home 10 mins late
  • #8: Modern medicines work on Physical body – only giving symptomatic relief. Asthma, HP – life long medicines – don’t cure – just give relief.
  • #9: Wild animal attack. Army at constant war – red alert.Elastic stretched too long
  • #14: Cyclic nature of universeLess relaxation when there is no stimulationTo relax one must first stretch
