There are two main types of research: deductive and inductive. Deductive research follows a top-down approach moving from general theories to specific hypotheses to observations, working to confirm or reject the hypotheses. Inductive research uses a bottom-up approach moving from specific observations to patterns to tentative hypotheses to broader theories. Both deductive and inductive approaches are often used together in a circular process as theories lead to observations which then lead to new patterns and theories.
