DVD:
DVD stands fordigital versatile disc, it’s ahigh-density videodisc that stores large
amounts of data DVD are commonly used as a format of presenting a movie, DVD
can holds a minimum of 4.7GB of data (this can be enough for a full-length movie).
CD:
A compact disc is an optical disc used to store digital data. CD’s were originally
created to store and playback sound recording that were only in the format of (CD-
DA), but was later adapted for storage of data (CD-ROM)
Tape:
A tape is another device used to store recorded sound, it’s magnetically coated strip
of plastic, they have large storage capacities, ranging from a few hundredkilobytes to
several gigabytes and storing on a tape is considerably cheaper than storing data
on disks.
Hard disk:
often referred to as a "disk drive," "hard drive," or "hard disk drive,” a hard disk is part of a unit,
which stocks and provides moderately quick access to enormous amounts of data on an
electromagnetically charged surface/ surfaces.
MiniDisc:
sometimes referred to as (MD) for short, a MiniDisc is digital disc medium used to,
store music or data on where a small disc
is housedin acartridge and is either recordable or playback, a MiniDiscis just a smaller
version of a DVD, or CD
Cable:
A cable is a rope; it’s used to carry electric currents. An optical cable contains one or
more optical fibres in a protective jacket that supports the fibres. In a recording
studio a cable would be used to connect electrical devices to each other or power
sockets.
Gains stages:
Again stage is a stage during an audio signal flow that the engineer can make
adjustments to the level (this definition refers to audio engineering),, such as a
fader on a mixing console .
Signal flow:
An audio signal flow is the trail an audio signal takes from source to output, this
includes all the processing involved in generating audible sound from electronic
impulses or recorded media.
Metering:
Metering makes the process of setting optimum signal levels more efficient and
quicker as it warns you of potential problems before they occur. Outside the technical
considerations of avoiding overloads and maximising signal-to-noise ratio, the
majority of level meters found on recorders and consoles are really only intended as
an aid to balancing sound levels.
Direct Injection:
Direct Injection in terms of audio production processes is referred to as a DI unit,
direct box or DI box, its a device typically used in recording studios to link a high-
impedance, line level, unbalanced output signal to a low-impedance microphone
level balanced input, commonly through XLR connector.
Multi-track:
Multi-track is the act of recording sound using tape containing two or more tracks,
usually four to twenty-foursince the 60s, recordings have been made with tape
recorders having 4 to 24 separate channels.
Analog Recording:
Analog/analogue recordingis a method used to recordanalog signals, which among
many possibilities include analog audio, audio frequency, and analog
video information for later playback.
Digital Recording:
In a digital recording system, sound is stored and manipulated as a stream of discrete
numbers, each number representing the air pressure at a particular time.
