Dengue fever is an illness caused by infection with a virus transmitted by the Aedes mosquito. The Aedes mosquito is black and white with stripes, bites during the day, and lays eggs in clean stagnant water. Only female Aedes mosquitoes bite humans to obtain blood needed to produce eggs. To prevent dengue fever, people should remove stagnant water where mosquitoes breed, use insecticide, and educate others on prevention.
