• Students often face depression while in school for various
reasons.
• More than 79% of students face depression of one form
or another.
• This shows how depression is a real and serious issue
among students
• The extent of depression may vary from one course to
another
• It is also different with gender where males experience
more depression preference than their female counter parts
• Students from government colleges are more prone to
depression
What are the causes?
• Lack of sleep
• Poor eating habits
• Not enough exercise
• Financial worries
• Pressure to get a good job after school
• Failed relationships
Depression risk factors
• Substance abuse
• A family history of depression and mental illness
• A prior suicide attempt
• Stressful life events
• Access to guns
• Exposure to other students who have died as a
result of suicide
• Self-harming behaviors such as burning or cutting
What are the symptoms?
• Difficulty handling schoolwork
• Loss of interest in activities, such as clubs,
sports or other social commitments
• Changes in eating or sleeping patterns
• Emotional outbursts, such as tearfulness or
anger
• Sense of being overwhelmed
• Panic
• Faulty self-assessments
• Lack of energy
How does it affect students?
• Poor academic performance
• May lead to suicide
• Causes poor health and exposure to diseases
• Physical and mental exhaustion
• Violent and aggressive actions
• Isolation from others or issues with relationships
How should it be addressed?
• Students should be educated about depression to
improve recognition and diagnosis.
• Talk to a professional
• Get adequate sleep
• Practice mindfulness
• Take care to manage stress
• Avoid drugs and alcohol
• Improve nutrition
• Strengthen connections with friends and family

• Depression among students in higher learning institutions is a real issue that
must be addressed.
• It seems that it is not avoidable based on the causes and risk factors
• It must be addressed by providing support to students through creating
awareness and other necessary support to help students deal with depression
